Powerful Words

?
The power of speech is the great tool with which man can build heaven and earth, as it is written, “And I have placed My words in your mouth ... to implant the heavens and to set a base for the earth ...” (Yeshayahu 51:16). The prophet speaks in a most literal sense, for through the sacred words of Torah study and prayer that a Jew utters on this earth, exalted worlds and angels are created Above. With regard to the latter, the Mishnah states: “He who fulfills even a single mitzvah gains for himself a single advocate” (Avos?4:13). By “advocate,” the Mishnah means that these angels will intercede on the person’s behalf before the Heavenly Throne.
?
The level of sanctity of these worlds and angels is contingent upon two factors: the spiritual readiness of the person at the time he performed the mitzvah, and the quality of the medium through which the mitzvah was performed. A person who avoids loshon hora and utilizes his power of speech in a positive way is forever enhancing the spiritual power of his words. Thus, the Torah study and prayer which emanate from his lips are endowed with an exalted spiritual light. Conversely, if a person defiles his mouth with words of gossip, mockery, falsehood and the like, with what sort of sanctity can his words of study and prayer be endowed? He is a craftsman who has severely damaged his indispensable tool. His only recourse is to mend his ways and refine his power of speech.

Words of Defeat
?
Sifre states:
?
With ten trials did our ancestors test [God in the Wilderness], but their judgment was sealed only on account of the sin of loshon hora, as it is written, “They have tested Me these ten times and did not heed My voice” (Bamidbar?14:22),1 and it is written, “You have made Hashem weary [i.e. unrelenting] with your words” (Malachi 2:17).
?
The generation of the wicked King Achav was plagued by idol worship; yet they were victorious in war in merit of their not informing on one another (Yerushalmi Pe’ah 1:1). This is evident from the fact that no one revealed to Achav that Ovadiah, aided by others, was sustaining one hundred prophets of Hashem against the king’s wishes. However, in the days of the righteous Shaul, when informers such as Doeg and the Ziphites5 were found among the Jews, their armies fell in battle. The fact that there were children in Shaul’s generation who were knowledgeable in forty-nine facets of Torah was not enough to gain them victory. Such is the power of loshon hora.
?
?

1. God uttered these words after the Spies had spoken their slanderous report of the land. The Talmud (Arachin 15a) enumerates the ten tests.

?
A Triple Tragedy

?
Midrash Shochar Tov (Tehillim 52:2) states:
?
It was taught in the academy of R’ Yishmael: Whoever relates loshon hora commits grave sins which equal the Three [Cardinal] Sins of idolatry, immorality and murder.1 [This can be deduced as follows]: Regarding loshon hora it is written, “May Hashem cut off all equivocating lips, the tongue which speaks haughty words [gedolos]” (Tehillim 12:4). Regarding idolatry it is written, “I implore! This people have committed a great sin [gadola]” (Shemos 32:31). Regarding immorality it is written, “How can I perpetrate this great evil [Hagedola]?” (Bereishis 39:9). And regarding murder it is written, “Is my sin too great to be borne [gadol]?” (Bereishis?4:13). [Thus, the plural form is found only with regard to loshon hora.]
?
Alternatively: When someone commits murder, he kills a single soul, but one who speaks loshon hora destroys three: the subject of his words, his listener and himself. From where do we see this? From Doeg, who spoke loshon hora concerning Achimelech (I Shmuel chs. 21-22) and thereby destroyed Shaul, who accepted the report; Achimelech, about whom it was spoken; and himself. Shaul, who accepted it, [died because of it] as it is written: “Shaul died for the faithlessness with which he acted towards Hashem” (I Divrei HaYamim?10:13); Achimelech [died because of it], for about him it was said [by Shaul], “Die, you shall die, Achimelech (I Shmuel?22:16); and Doeg was banished from the World [to Come], as it is written, “Likewise, God will shatter you for eternity” (Tehillim 52:7). And what caused this? Loshon hora.
?
?
  1. The Midrash cannot mean that speaking loshon hora is a greater sin than any of the Three Cardinal Sins, for they carry the death penalty while speaking loshon hora does not. The Midrash means that speaking loshon hora can lead to the transgression of many severe sins (Maharsha)

Order Your “Dam Hamaccabim” Pin - Oz veGaon is part of the Project!

Order Your “Dam Hamaccabim” Pin - Oz veGaon is part of the Project!

In the fields of Israel grows a beautiful and resilient red flower, poignantly called “Dam Hamaccabim”- the Blood of the Maccabees. Legend has it that everywhere a drop of blood spilled from one of these ancient Judean rebel warriors, another flower came into being. In their deaths, they commanded our land to bring forth new life.

Our being in the Land of Israel is in the merit of all those brave men and women, over the centuries, who sacrificed their lives so that our nation could live on.

This wildflower grows only in Israel’s region, usually up in the mountains where the Maccabee battles took place. Its blossom each year is in April during the season of Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day. The legend and these characteristics of the flower made it the perfect candidate for Israel’s official Memorial Flower.

The flower became popular as stamps and depicted in monuments and military graveyards throughout the country. However, as a delicate protected wildflower growing in the mountains, it was never actually worn on Yom HaZikaron. In its stead, Israelis would wear a sticker with a picture of the flower.

This changed in 2019 when a group of people founded the “Dam Hamaccabim” organization and found a way to grow these wildflowers in hothouses, and to accelerate their natural blossoming time by three months so that the flowers would be ready for distribution, in Israel and abroad, in time for Israel’s Memorial Day.

The process of drying and preserving the flowers takes approximately seven days. Once they are ready, they are formed into a decorative pin. Each flower is then individually packaged and is ready to be shipped.

These pins are sold as a fundraiser for different organizations and projects that commemorate the fallen. This year the Oz veGaon project is part of it too together with others.

The flower carries the message of growth from loss and the ability to always choose life. It is a constant reminder that all that blossoms and thrives in our country- is in the merit of the brave men and women who gave their lives for us, our country, our heritage, and our people.

This message of “Am Yisrael Chai in Eretz Yisrael” is also the message we pass on in Oz veGaon.

We urge you to join this beautiful initiative and order pins to wear on Yom Hazikaron.

To order pins:?

We were told that at this point orders can only be in Israeli Shekels.

Lesson 28- The Ubiquity of Ashrei

Mizmor 145 (Tehila l’David/Ashrei)

Mizmor 145, Ashrei, is said three times on a daily basis every day and on all holidays. What is the special message contained in this mizmor that justifies its multiple recitations and its unique heading "Tehila l’David"?

In this mizmor, the psalmist first blesses God on his own (1-2), in the middle he invites others to join him (10) and in the last line (21) "all flesh" will join King David to praise God. In addition, Mizmor 145 is located at a critical junction in the book of Tehillim; it is the final mizmor in the last David collection (138-145) and, it is also the opening mizmor of the final Hallel unit (145-150). Contextual interpretation will aid in the understanding of this mizmor and its location at the end of the entire Book of Tehillim: While the Egyptian Hallel (113-118) experienced the new exodus from the Exile, and the Great Hallel (135-136) celebrates the Jewish people living in Zion, in the final Hallel (145-150) at the end of this process, David invites all Jews and Gentiles in the world to sing a new song and praise Hashem with him (145); and indeed, this happens gradually in the final Hallel unit which concludes the entire narrative of the book of Tehillim. See you on Tuesday 12:15 PM EDT / 7:15 PM IDT

Awakening the Accuser
?
Sifre1 states that Hashem, as it were, does not want to associate with gossipers and rescue them from troubles. Zohar states (Parashas Shelach): “R’ Shimon said: Of everything is the Holy One, Blessed is He, forgiving — except for loshon hora.” The reason for this is perfectly clear.
?
When a Jew speaks loshon hora, he causes accusation in Heaven toward the Jewish people. In the words of Zohar (Parashas Pekudei), this sin “brings plague, sword and murder to this world. Woe to those who awaken this evil force, who do not guard their tongues and pay no heed to this! They do not realize that the ways of Heaven are reflective of the ways on this world, both for good and for bad. [Through evil talk,] Satan is aroused to voice accusation against the entire world.”
?
A father’s great love for his child can impel him to make allowances for the child’s bad behavior. When a father is forced to rebuke his child, he does it lovingly, with abundant compassion. However, if people come to the father and report that they witnessed how the child quarreled with others over nothing, and that he embarrassed and ridiculed his peers, the father will have no alternative but to take strong measures to ensure that his child mend his ways.
?
Hashem loves the Jewish people with a deep, unfathomable love. In the words of the prophet: “Is Ephraim My most precious son or a delightful child, that whenever I speak of him I remember him more and more? Therefore, My inner self yearns for him, I will surely take pity on him...” (Yirmiyahu 31:19-20).
?
Of course, Hashem is well aware of all that transpires both in public and in private, as it is written, “Can a man hide in a hidden place so that I will not see him’ says Hashem?” (Yirmiyahu?23:24). Nevertheless, out of His great love for Israel, He is slow to anger and seeks to find merit for His nation, as it is written, “He gazes at no iniquity in Yaakov...” (Bamidbar?23:21; see Rashi). In His infinite wisdom, Hashem has decreed that His judgment of man reflect the intercessions and accusations of the Heavenly angels. When the Accuser [i.e. Satan] comes before Him to relate the sins of His people, then He feels compelled, as it were, to respond.
?
And it is those who speak loshon hora who cause the Accuser to speak against the Jewish people.

?
Do Whatever You Can (II)

?
“Do you really think that you can avoid everything that must not be spoken? Why, you are a man of the world, you have dealings with scores of people!” This was another argument cited above, which can lead a person to totally ignore the concept of shmiras haloshon.
?
Again, we respond with an analogy: Let us suppose that I was hurrying somewhere to engage in a business enterprise. A man asks me, “Why do you hurry? Do you think that this enterprise will make you one of the world’s richest men, like So-and-so?” Surely I would reply, “Is that a reason not to seek a livelihood for myself?!”
?
If this response is correct when material matters are concerned, then surely it applies when spiritual matters are at stake. If one feels that he cannot abide by the laws of forbidden speech with all their details and fine points, does this mean that he should refrain entirely from caring for his soul? Is it reason to allow oneself to, Heaven forbid, be counted among the ba’alei loshon hora (habitual gossipers) who will not merit to bask in the glory of the Divine Presence (Sotah 42a)?
?
Reishis Chochmah (Sha’ar HaAhavah ch. 54) relates that R’ Moshe Cordovero 1 saw the author of Shushan Sodos in a dream [following the latter’s passing], and he was shining like the light of a torch. The deceased revealed that this was in merit of his having avoided idle chatter while on this world. Should such merit be totally forfeited because one feels that to acquire it in its entirety is out of reach?
?
The wisest of men declared, “Whatever you are able to do with your might, do it” (Koheles?9:10), meaning that even if one feels he cannot fulfill a given mitzvah in all its fine points, nevertheless, he should strive to fulfill it to the best of his ability. It is in this vein that our Sages derived from the verse, “Then Moshe set aside three cities” (Devarim?4:41), that although those three cities could not afford refuge [to one who murdered inadvertently] until the three cities in the Land of Canaan had been set aside —and Moshe knew that he would not be permitted to enter the Land of Israel and set them aside —nevertheless, Moshe said: “I will accomplish whatever is in my power to accomplish.”2

Do Whatever You Can (I)
?
A Torah scholar once posed the following question: If one has failed to concentrate while reciting the Shemoneh Esrei prayer and finds himself near its conclusion, with what approach can he inspire himself to pray the remainder of the prayer with proper concentration? The scholar offered a solution by way of a parable:
?
A young girl was standing in the marketplace with a large basket of apples for sale. Suddenly, a thief approached and began to snatch apples out of the basket. The girl became confused and stood helplessly, not knowing what to do. Someone who was watching from a distance called out to her, “Why are you standing still? What are you waiting for —that he should grab everything? Just as he is grabbing, so should you grab-? whatever you can get will still be yours!”
?
And so it is regarding prayer. If one was overcome by lethargy and mindless daydreaming at the start of the Shemoneh Esrei, and suddenly finds himself near the prayer’s end without having “grabbed any apples,” this does not mean that he should give up and leave himself with nothing. Rather, he should strive with all his inner strength to concentrate on the remaining blessings.
?
And so it is, exactly, with shmiras haloshon. You stumbled this morning and spoke the forbidden? Then stand ready this afternoon to overcome your evil inclination and refrain from forbidden talk. And if you fail in the afternoon, nevertheless, strengthen yourself to do battle once more tomorrow. Surely Hashem will help you to succeed, for “one who seeks to purify himself is granted Heavenly assistance” (Shabbos 104a).
Do you know someone who needs a refuah shleima? A shidduch? Or perhaps a meaningful yahrtzeit is approaching?
