New to D-Star

I was gifted a ID-4100A for Fathers Day; I honestly have never pursued digital modes but this looks interesting. My mother is in S California in the middle of earthquake country and I would like an alternate way to communicate with her on her Icom D-Star HT.
It appears I have completed the registration for myself but still need to tie myself to a home repeater. All the web sites I go to to complete that part come us as "down" with a message stating a secure connection cannot be made.
I live in Gilbert AZ and was looking at the Mesa (Usrey) site. Any reading suggestions and assistance with the repeater registration would be much appreciated!

Bob,

DSTAR Is an awesome mode. It is very powerful as an advanced local communication tool. It has a lot of functionality for EMCOMM in the local area. If it can connect to the internet, you can communicate with your mother easily. If an earthquake happens and they lose the internet it will be more difficult. ?She could use her radio to reach someone who could get a message to you. HF would be best. DSTAR was developed for advanced local communication.?

That said, that is not what everyone uses it for.?

I hold a net every Saturday night on REF009C I would encourage you and your mother to join us. ?I won’t be having it this Saturday because of the 4th.?

Tnx

Outstanding! I will plan to attend the net in the coming weeks. At this time I am registered but not to a specific repeater. That process is quite tedious as many of the registration sites listed are"down".
I pass the "echo" test on the local Mesa and Globe gateways but I have yet to talk to anyone. I am hesitant to link to another site or even a reflector because I am not sure what the protocols are.
Thank you for your reply!

Bob,

Before trying to relink, The repeater. Talk to some folks on it. You want to talk to someone through the reflector to make sure everything is set up correctly. Then you can try relinking. But get on and use the system. Once you are sure everything is set up, I can help you the how to’s.?

Thanks
