Automatic fallback to a backup digital repeater

John Barrett

Has anyone put together a program that will periodically test data connectivity to the current "access point" (dstar repeater), and if that repeater is non-responsive, automatically switch through a list of repeaters round robin until it finds an active connection ??

Would there be any interest in a program to do this, and perhaps a bit more ??

I'm setting up what amounts to a mobile network hot spot with backhaul transport agility that will be capable of backhaul over D-Star, 2.4ghz Mesh, and 4G wireless, with the routing selected automatically based on the current availability and reliability of each potential backhaul link. End users (other hams, personel associated with a served agency) will connect via hardwire ethernet or Part 15 802.11B/G, and gain access to services through a web portal installed on the routing computer. Security will be implemented by blocking all traffic from the Part 15 network until such time as the end user logs into the web portal, thus allowing the the portal to validate their identity and load the account profile which will contain information about the "roles" which the account may access. The majority of roles will grant access to services provided directly by the portal computer (webmail, weather radar, etc) where the portal is acting as a concentrator/cache such that many users viewing the same information produce no more traffic than a single user viewing the same information. However, each role in the system will optionally have an associated profile of protocols/ports/addresses which will allow the portal to open a very specific set of holes in the firewall for the end user, allowing direct access to the backhaul network to support applications that cannot be handled by the web portal directly (streaming video, file transfers, etc)

Comments appreciated :)

Minnesota DD Mode Experiences

We currently have five ID-RP1D units installed on building rooftops around the Twin Cities Metro Area. Each has a Linux thin client attached that has a tiny web site, and provides routing services. We also run a package called Citadel, which provides conferencing and mail services.

Our use of these machines is a little like satellites. Users who need them link to the nearest one, and then can either link to another ID-1 user, or use services on the attached router/thin client. In a formal event, databases or other servers can be "uplinked" to the routers, and multiple users can access these services.

For the Marathon, in our data trailer we run uplinks to two of our repeaters. This year, four remote ID-1s (each with one of more laptops) were able to reach the database trailer. We had three ID-1 users on one repeater and one on another. We also had quite a few laptops on 802.11G in the Finish Line area that were on the same database.

Our main job data wise is missing runner location - if your family member does not finish on time, you can see if we have any status on them.

D-STAR High-Speed Data Replaces Packet Radio at Twin Cities, MN Marathon

Subject: AX.25 Packet Retired from the 2009 MTCM Project - All Data now D-Star DD Mode

After three years of flawless D-Star operation in 2007-2009, the Amateur Radio team
supporting the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has officially retired AX.25
packet from the effort.

"We've used D-Star DD Mode now for three years, and we're no longer afraid
of the technology" said one of the leaders of the project.

The five Icom D-Star RP-1D access points installed on Twin Cities building
rooftops have been 100% reliable, including at the unusually warm 2007 race,
where more than 50 runners were sent to area hospitals. The group uses
Linux routers with DNAT co-located with the RP-1Ds to allow dozens of
area Amateur Operators to have high speed access to applications in a
central data trailer without use of the Internet.

"The low data rate, complexity of the character mode interface, and user
training issues we have had with packet have put it on the back burner" said
Erik Westgard, NY9D.? "Again this year we can sit any available operators or
even community volunteers in front of our web based missing runner
application and they can be helping family members immediately."

One objective for the 2010 team is to start phasing in D-STAR digital voice, who
also allows the concurrent use of low speed data.

Greetings from Northern Virginia

Tom Azlin N4ZPT

Hi All,

Myself and a dozen others here in Northern Virginia and Maryland have
used 23cm DD mode to support the Marine Corps Marathon the past three
years. And will do it again in a week for this year's race. Some of us
are the operators at the aid stations on the course while others are
responsible for the three access points that will be supporting the aid
stations. We conducted a communications exercise on Columbus Day to make
sure we were all set. 23cm D-STAR DD mode has been very effective with
our served agency, the US Navy medics, who are very happy with the
ability for aid stations to get data and to load data into the main
databases. While we expect to run 9600 bps packet as a backup this year
it might be the last year we do this given the redundancy of three good
access points overlooking the course.

Mark WB9QZB loaded a three part file that is the briefing I gave at the
Chicago DCC a couple weeks ago discussing how we use digital
communications to support this Marathon.

Greetings from the front range of Colorado! The W0CDS D-Star stack is located on Mt. Thorodin northwest of Denver at an elevation of 10,500 feet ASL. The 23cm coverage is quite good in the Denver area, so if you are ever in the area with an ID-1 then you should be able to get into the machine via DV with a whip antenna on the car. There are also many locations in Denver and the immediate suburbs where you can access the internet via the DD mode with just a whip antenna on the car, but that's while parked, of course, not moving.

Some basic observations noted:
- You must have a strong, solid signal between stations in order to make DD mode successful. That doesn't always mean line-of-sight is required. I have established DD mode connections between my car and my house at 10 miles without line-of-sight. I also can establish a DD mode connection between my house and the W0CDS stack at 50 miles without line-of-sight by using a 23 element Yagi at the house.

- Using D-RATS in the DV mode works very well. Since the data channel in DV mode does not provide error correction, again you must have a strong signal between stations in order to achieve a good bit error rate.

- The ID-1 has been a good rugged radio for me. It's an ideal radio for ARES communications due to the data capabilities and the more secure nature of being digital and being on 23cm.

Feel free to connect to port A on W0CDS and give a shout. I often monitor while commuting and at home. I'm always willing to help out with scheduled demos if you need to show your local officials what D-Star can do, or if you just want to try out D-RATS on your ID-1.

Re: Greetings from W9DMD in central Illinois

>We also have the 1.2Ghz DD & DV repeaters, but are awaiting funds for the antenna and hardline. We hope to have this up by next spring some time. At least we hope to have the DD portion up and running. The 1.2Ghz duplexers seem to run about $1300!

We sometimes forget that you can also run a repeater on two antennas (TX/RX) and at 23cm vertical separation isn't that big. ?Just something to think about. ?You could maybe run the repeater with split antennas until and if you get funds for a duplexer or one of the nifty triplexer units.
