Re: ID1 radio for Emcomms to support WebEoc ??

First, let's get the details correct.

The Internet is NOT going to fail. Just ain't going to happen, it's an impossibility because of the design.
That statement is a myth that corrupts a lot of disaster planning: the Internet can and has failed within disaster areas. While it is completely true that short of a major asteroid strike or global nuclear war the entire internet is not going to go down everywhere in the world, it is wholly unreasonable to assume that there's going to be internet where you need it when you need it unless you're planning to bring internet with you from somewhere else.

Disasters have a nasty habit of destroying infrastructure - the infrastructure on which internet is conveyed. I'm pretty sure internet failed in Haiti. Internet failed or was degraded in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. Internet was degraded or failed in the recent earthquake in Chile. Internet was degraded or failed in the aftermath of the 1998 ice storm in Ontario/Quebec/NE US depending where you went.

Even the little magnitude 5 earthquake we had here crashed the cell network for a few hours and reduced internet to a crawl for a while, and it didn't even actually anything of note. Internet was degraded, and it wasn't even a disaster!

If you are depending on internet to be available for your communications at any location, you've already lost the battle before you start.

What CAN and WILL often happen is that YOUR connection to all or part of the Internet may fail. Or, the server that is hosting WebEOC may lose it's connection to all or part of the Internet.

So, If you have lost your connection to the Internet, but A DSTAR repeater with an Internet connection and the High Speed Data module still has its connection, then by using an ID-1 on your side, you can get access to WebEOC.
That's a huge "but". In the event of an emergency, one should not expect a handy D-STAR repeater to be available with an internet connection. If one is, that's awesome, but to plan for there to be one would be folly.

The primary concern, in my estimation, would be to get message traffic out of the disaster area to a place where it can be put on the internet or wherever it needs to go.

For D-Star that means having enough repeaters distributed over a sufficiently wide area that whatever likely disaster happens, there's always repeaters near the edges of, but outside, the disaster area. D-Star has nowhere near that kind of coverage yet, although it's probably close in some geographic areas.

Once you have that, then your emcomms deal with bridging from the disaster area to areas outside where the infrastructure is unharmed.

Or, you can bypass the Internet completely by using 2 ID-1s as an Ethernet bridge. There's a little bit of networking that have to be added to make it work, but it's a pretty simple process.

Two ID-1s talking to each other, is essentially the equivalent of a half-duplex crossover Ethernet cable running at 100 kbps. You can hook two computers together, but you also have to worry about things such as IP Addresss and DNS access.
This, I think, is the real strength of D-STAR... being able to build ad-hoc data networks over radio, capable of relatively long distance and high speed transmission. You could extend internet from where it works into a disaster area where it does not, with D-STAR. The ability to do that is very important.

You can't assume there will be working repeaters nearby. It would have to be a pretty small disaster (possible, certainly, but not likely I think) to have any realistic chance of repeaters being available within the range of a 10 W transmission. I think you would need multiple links to go from a disaster site out to somewhere that you could reasonably expect there to be working internet.

Ed is very right about the coverage for high speed data, and that pretty much guarantees needing to set up your own network backbone - a web of HSD links and routing, etc. leading out of the disaster area to a distant repeater or other internet access point of some kind.

First, let¡¯s get the details correct.

?

The Internet is NOT going to fail. Just ain¡¯t going to happen, it¡¯s an impossibility because of the design.

?

What CAN and WILL often happen is that YOUR connection to all or part of the Internet may fail. Or, the server that is hosting WebEOC may lose it¡¯s connection to all or part of the Internet.

?

So, If you have lost your connection to the Internet, but A DSTAR repeater with an Internet connection and the High Speed Data module still has its connection, then by using an ID-1 on your side, you can get access to WebEOC.

?

If the WebEOC server has lost its connection, then things are kind of the same, but actually different because the normal IP address and DNS record used to access WebEOC are no longer valid. Give a good networking guy a little bit of incentive, and this is not hard to fix.

?

Or, you can bypass the Internet completely by using 2 ID-1s as an Ethernet bridge. There¡¯s a little bit of networking that have to be added to make it work, but it¡¯s a pretty simple process.

?

Two ID-1s talking to each other, is essentially the equivalent of a half-duplex crossover Ethernet cable running at 100 kbps. You can hook two computers together, but you also have to worry about things such as IP Addresss and DNS access.

?

I¡¯m pretty sure that I¡¯ve run WebEOC of an ID-1 through a D-STAR repeater.? No big deal.

?

Also remember that the coverage of the High Speed Data is not as great as DV mode. A 300kHz wide 10W signal just doesn¡¯t do as much as a 6 kHz wide 10W signal.

New D-STAR Repeater Now in Place in ARRL Laboratory

New D-STAR Repeater Now in Place in ARRL Laboratory

09/02/2010

The ARRL Lab has installed a D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio) repeater in the Lab at the ARRL Headquarters building. Operating with an output of 147.390 MHz, positive offset, the W1HQ D-STAR repeater is a local repeater with a modest footprint covering the Hartford-New Britain, Connecticut area. The antenna is on the roof of the Headquarters building with the repeater located in the Lab. With its gateway, the repeater is accessible to any D-STAR user on the planet. The Lab¡¯s call sign is W1INF.

¡°The purpose of the repeater is to better educate the Lab staff on D-STAR technology,¡± explained ARRL Test

Engineer Bob Allison, WB1GCM. ¡°In turn, we will have the ability to handle some of our members' questions on the matter. We also intend to use this new technology when emergencies occur where D-STAR technology is deployed.¡±

In the near future, the W1HQ D-STAR system will also include 70 and 23 cm repeaters, as well as a 23 cm high speed data link, once initial frequency coordination is granted. ¡°We¡¯re especially interested in the high speed data link,¡± Allison said. ¡°Though it will have a limited range, we can begin experimenting with its potential and use it as a training tool for Lab staff.¡±

Allison thanked Bill Unghire, N1CNV, for his contributions as the major motivator for the ARRL HQ D-STAR project. ¡°Bill, an ARRL Life Member, also provided valuable IT support with setting up the gateway,¡± he said. Building Manager Greg Kwasowski, W1GJK, handled the installation of all of the hardware, and Allison and W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, handled the testing and coordination efforts. ¡°Try giving the Lab a call -- during our noon lunch break, of course,¡± Allison invited.

Dstar and MESH Access

Hi guys, I'm new to the group.

I have a question, I am trying to get this to work but I'm stuck. I have a linksys router converted to HSMM-MESH node, linked to another mesh node which is connected to the Dstar gateway.

So far it looks like it connects to the trust server however, I can't seem to connect to any reflectors or push audio. I have ports open on the mesh node for the gateway and for the router which is connected to the internet.

Do I need to open the ports on the Mesh node connected to the internet/gateway.

Example:

Mesh Node1 = Dstar Gatwway
Mesh Node2 = Internet ------> which is connected to router that is connected to the DSL modem

Any help appreciated thank

Re: WinX64 USB driver for ID-1

Well done James,

That's very VERY interesting, now how do we find the x64 driver as it's not on the ICOM USA website last time I looked.?

I guess uploading it too the yahoo groups files would violate copyright but that sure sounds promising. Where do you think we should go from here and secondly did the driver require any "non signature enforcement" to activate it on booting up.

I know there are work arounds that have been forward however none particularly user friendly for me.

The pc could not successfully auto-install the driver when I plugged in the ID-1 into a usb port. I uninstalled the usb port from the hardware manager, plugged the ID-1 in again and did a manual install when an install wizard of some sort was offered. I selected the WinX64 driver folder and the install was successful.

The software seems to be running OK. I do have a problem adjusting the volume and squelch controls when trying to do a right or left-click with the computers mouse pad or external mouse. I am not sure why that is. I have to click and drag to compensate. That could be the nature of the e-machine. I don't have another Win7 computer to test that assumption, but at least using Win7 with the ID-1 is do-able.

I was a REAL EARLY adopter of D-Star but not enough interest developed in local clubs,
so repeaters never got deployed etc., and remaned nice and dry/warm in my living room!

Used ID-1s only for D-Star demos at clubs etc., some times taking repeaters along
in their travel case but not actually powering repeaters up. Just too much for one
guy to manage especially since I don't have a good repeater site of my own to use.

So need to sell and let some club or group put into use. I have 2 more ID-1 for my use
so not giving up on D-Star, just can't be the one to setup/manage a repeater site alone.

Any interest, contact me and let's work something out so this fine gear gets deployed
some where. Perhaps even in a mobile EMCOMM setup using the travel case I have.
