Congratulations to Joel Morse for his article in the October Ops Sig Dispatcher’s Office

Congratulations to Joel Morse for his article in the October Ops Sig Dispatcher’s Office Titled “Working the Delhi Turn” detailing the operations on his beautiful New York, Ontario and Western Railway layout. There are plenty of photos as we follow the crew as they navigate the Dehli trick.

Also a photo of this train graces the cover of the October issue.

Joel also had an informative operations article in the April issue as well.

For those of you interested, the Ops Sig web site is opsig.org, and a one year electronic subscription is a bargain at only $10 which includes access to quarterly issues dating back to 2003.

Photo: Model Icing Platform Scene (HO Scale)

This photo by John Parrish of Upland won First Prize in the model photo contest at the PSR Convention this past weekend.

The reefers are InterMountain and Athearn. They were weathered using pastels and paint by brush and airbrush.

The ice loading dock, ice making plant and other details were scratch built with wood and Evergreen styrene. Figures are from Walthers.

Palm tree branches were made using the narrow, dried branches of a Sugi Japanese Cedar tree, airbrushed and then attached to the palm trunks using hot glue.? Other scenery

was made using natural materials.

The one-foot high backdrop photo was taken by John out by Santa Paula, California.

The scene is part of a four-foot wide by two-foot deep modular layout section.

John placed the board and backdrop outside in natural sunlight to approximate the same time of day and shadows shown in the backdrop photo.

Model Railroader featured a larger section of this modular display scene in the "Trackside Photo" section of the October 2021 issue, Pages 64 and 65.

Video: Hand & Other Tools

Video: Hand & Other Tools

A new, forty-eight minute Jack Burgess YouTube video came out yesterday:

I believe some of the material has appeared before but there are new items covered.

These are basic everyday tools you should have plus some tools you may want to acquire for more complex projects and scratch-building.

The constant message here is “Don’t buy cheap tools”.

There is a “clinic handout” at:

The handout tells you where to purchase some of the tools seen in this video.

Re: 1980 PCR/NMRA Convention Car

Bob,

I'm glad to tell that the PSR Historical collection has one of these cars.

Per Harwe
PSR Historian

1980 PCR/NMRA Convention Car

1980 PCR/NMRA Convention Car

A long time ago, before the creation of the Pacific Southwest Region in 1982, a group known as the Boomers organized the largest regional convention ever held in the PCR or PSR. This was the 1980

Convention held at the Disneyland Hotel. Over 900 persons registered for this four-day event. Over 800 attended the banquet.

For the convention car, Model Die Casting produced 600 custom decorated HO scale Harriman observation cars.

While this was a nice car it didn’t have the quite the appeal a freight car would have. And as an observation car it didn’t seem to generate the demand of a coach or other mid-train car.

As a result, only 280 cars were sold. The remaining 320 cars were stored at the Brea home of Ralph DuBois. Subsequently there was a fire at Ralph’s home and all 320 cars were destroyed.

So, if you see one of these cars at a swap meet it is somewhat rare, although smaller runs of other convention cars make them rare, too. But the car is a survivor of sorts, having escaped the fiery fate of most of the cars produced for the 1980 PCR Convention.

Virtual Layout Tours For My Classroom

?Happy Get her flowers or get in trouble so you can run your train day,

As many of you know, I am a teaching and 100% virtual this year.? I actually have two electives called Nautical, Aviation, and Railroad art.??
I just got a green light from our virtual academy principal to invite guest speakers to my classes.? I have full control over this in terms of dates and I will work that out on an individual basis.? What I am asking is if anyone would like to allow me to take my Zoom class for a visit on your layout. It can be brief and to the point, an actual tour, anything we like, but trust me, the kids will love it.? ?You can email me or talk to me on Tuesday.? Thanks
?
If any of you have any other topic or something of interest that would be great too.

Wisconsin Model Train Company Finds Unexpected Growth Amid Pandemic

MILWAUKEE — The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many businesses around Wisconsin to face significant hardship.

However, other businesses have seen unexpected areas of growth as people spend more time at home. One area where that has been seen is in the hobby industry, including a Milwaukee company that distributes model trains.

Walthers has been selling model trains and accessories since 1932. The fourth-generation family run business sells thousands of different model train related items out of a distribution center on Milwaukee’s northwest side.

Company President Stacey Walthers-Naffah says they have seen double digit growth since the start of the pandemic, with people having more time for new hobbies.

“It is very gratifying to me,” Walthers-Naffah said. “Exciting on the business side because it is always nice to see business growing, but I think what gives us pleasure is a lot of people are finding comfort in it, it is a productive way to use your time.”

Business has grown so much in recent months the company has several positions to fill in their distribution center.

Re: Fast Tracks 3-Way Fixture

That's good information, Jeff. Thanks.

I've opted to try to change my track plan so I won't need the three-way turnouts. Joel and another friend of mine helped me figure out a way to do that.

Thanks!

Dan

Dan:
Keeping the points flush and energizing the frogs (I run steam) always seemed to be a real challenge. Hand laying a better turnout than those commercially available might be the best way if your design requires a 3-way switch. My experience just wasn’t good- too much maintenance to keep it working. I didn’t hand lay the turnout...can’t remember the manufacture brand I used...possibly Shinohara.

I've bid on a couple of listings for three-way switches on eBay that weren't there when I did a search a couple of weeks ago. If I don't end up winning the auctions I'll let you know.

Thanks, Jeff, for your response. Any particular reason why you're recommending against 3-way switches in general?
