Do You Have Famous Ancestors?
Do you have famous ancestors? Diane and I would love for you to share your information with this group. To make this easier we are suspending the rule of only discussing members of your direct line. If you are a Smith but your famous ancestor is a Jones that is OK for this discussion. We want you to feel free to join in and let us all enjoy some interesting stories. Who will be first? Dorset Caddys
My line has been traced to John Caddy and Elizabeth Hardy, living in Broadwindsor and Burstock early in the eighteenth century. It seems to be the general opinion of those who have done this that John was first married to Mary Crabb, although one researcher maintains that the two women had different husbands. My purpose in posting is to ask whether any of John's descendants (or of either John if they were indeed not the same man), other than those of his son Benjamin (1743–1829), have been traced to the present day. John and Mary had a daughter Mary in 1709, and she had an illegitimate daughter Anna in 1740. They had a son Thomas in 1710, but he probably died in infancy, as there followed another Thomas in 1711. Elizabeth was baptised in 1716. William, baptised in 1719, married Mary Bonner and they had a daughter Charity who married John Stickland, and they had children Mary, Sarah, John, Betty, Hanah and Hannah from 1772 to 1782. Sarah was baptised in 1725. Susannah followed in 1727 and married John Morris in 1755; they had children John and Susanna, both baptised in 1761, and Susanna married Thomas Gale in 1784. Elizabeth Hardy's children included John Caddy, baptised in 1731 and Betty, baptised in 1733; she married John Turner in 1764, and they had Prbert, William and Anna from 1765 to 1770. Mary was baptised in 1737 and married Henry Sims in 1760; they had Sarah Symes in 1762 and Henry Sims in 1768. Benjamin came next, in 1743. He was followed by Thomas in 1744 and William in 1748. John Caddy had other children known to have died in infancy, but do you know of any descendants of his (or their) children who survived to adulthood? Even if they descended from his son Benjamin, I may not know of them yet (unless you and I have already been in contact). Apart from that, I shall be pleased to hear from any other Dorset Caddy descendants, as I have gathered various details over the years. Jeremy Wilkes

Saying Thanks To Our Front-Line Workers
First of all, To all of you who are involved in the "front lines" of this corona virus war - Thank You for all you are doing. Without you we would be in dire straits. Secondly, Diane and I thought it would be a good thing to share what is happening in your locations as far as showing appreciation to everyone involved in fighting the spread of this horrendous pandemic that has plagued the world. Please feel free to share what your community is doing in that regard. We have all seen the firefighters gathered to applaud the health workers. Diane says that she and her neighbors stand outside their doors and clap for the health workers. She suggests singing (to the tune of "Happy Birthday") the following: Thank you very much, Thank you very much, Thank you front line workers, Thank you very much. What ideas do you have? What have you witnessed in your communities? We are together in this and shall come out of it stronger. Jim "Pops" Jackson and Diane Sowden

Introduction From New Zealand
Hi All At this time of covid-19 lock-down in New Zealand, and being restricted to our homes, I have taken the opportunity to revisit some of my old contacts hence appearing here as a follow on from the previous Caddy forum. Like others I have a mother who was born Caddy descending from the Dorset Caddys. With the help in the past of Jeremy Wilkes I was able to extend my roots into the Dorset Caddys centred around Piddlehinton. This was through my 2x Great Grandfather Albert Caddy, parents Joseph & Harriet Caddy, who served in the British Army in New Zealand, married had two children only to loose his wife and daughter in 1861 leaving only his son Charles Edward Caddy. When his regiment left New Zealand he left behind Charles in the hands of his brother-in-law and as far as we can ascertain never saw him again. Albert eventually left the army and settled in County Cork, Ireland. I have tentatively taken my line back to John Caddy from Abbotsbury, Dorset, England in the elate 1500's. My ancestry tree contains my tree, tree name brucecq Keep safe Bruce Quedley

Introduction 2
I seem to be the second to take up the invitation to contribute to the new list. Having deleted ten entries from my diary since Monday afternoon, I have some time on my hands! Like Troy Brokenshire, I have a Caddy for a mother. Ours is one of the Dorset lines, and over the years I have gathered all the information that I have seen about Dorset Caddys and their descendants. I have not delved deeply into Cornwall, which seems to be the main centre of the name, although Sandra Roberts has registered a study of Caddie (with no spelling variations) with the Guild of One-Name Studies, and has found a significant number of instances in Scotland. I have picked up occurrences of Caddy and its variations in other parts of England. In Glamorgan and Monmouthshire it is often difficult to know whether the Caddys have Cornish or Dorset origins (the latter possibly via Somerset), or even derived from elsewhere. I wondered when using the old Rootsweb list how many others were doing so, whether my messages were being seen by half a dozen or hundreds of readers. It would be interesting to know how many subscribe to this list. I wonder also whether any Caddys have taken Y DNA tests; I know that several Caddy descendants have taken autosomal tests. There must, I think, be a strong likelihood that the known Dorset lines are related to each other, and it would be interesting to know whether there is a Cornwall-Dorset connection. I am in contact with Caddy-descended cousins in varying degrees living in several parts of the U.S.A. and at least two states in Australia, as well as a fourth cousin-in-law in New Zealand. Welcome to the Caddy Group 2
Welcome to /g/Caddy, our new Rootsweb replacement. This is an exciting time with a very impressive website and the opportunity to rekindle our communications and, perhaps, revive research that has been set aside for a time. Diane and I want to encourage you to make use of this group with your questions and whatever answers you may have for others' queries. To begin with, introductions are encouraged, including some history about yourself etc. Most importantly, we want you to enjoy your new home. If you have Facebook, Twitter or other connections where you may spread the word about us, please feel free to do so. Just direct them to the above address. Looking forward to hearing from you all, Jim "Pops" Jackson and Diane Sowden
