The 1% ers
99 % of those born between 1930 and 1946 (worldwide) are now dead. If you were born in this time span, you are one of the rare surviving 1% 'ers' of this special group. Their ages range between 77 and 93 years old, a 16-year age span. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE 1% ERS. You are the smallest group of children born since the early 1900s. You are the last generation, climbing out of the Depression, who can remember the winds of war and the impact of a world at war that rattled the structure of our daily lives for years. You are the last to remember ration books for everything from gas, to sugar, to shoes, to stoves. You saved tin foil and poured fried meat fat into tin cans. You can remember milk being delivered to your house early in the morning and placed in the "milk box" on the porch. Discipline was enforced by parents and teachers. You are the last generation who spent childhood without television; instead, you "imagined" what you heard on the radio. With no TV, you spent your childhood playing outside. There was no city playground for kids. The lack of television in your early years meant that you had little real understanding of what the world was like. We got "black-and-white" TV in the late 40s that had three stations and no remote. Telephones were one to a house, often shared (party lines), and hung on the wall in the kitchen (no cares about privacy). Computers were called calculators; they were hand-cranked. Typewriters were driven by pounding fingers, throwing the carriage, and changing the ribbon 'INTERNET' and 'GOOGLE' were words that did not exist. New highways would bring jobs and mobility. Most highways were 2 lanes. You went downtown to shop. You walked to school. The radio network expanded from 3 stations to thousands. Your parents were suddenly free from the confines of the Depression and the War, and they threw themselves into working hard to make a living for their families. You weren't neglected, but you weren't today's all-consuming family focus. They were glad you played by yourselves. They were busy discovering the postwar world. You entered a world of overflowing plenty and opportunity; a world where you were welcomed, enjoyed yourselves. You felt secure in your future, although the Depression and poverty were deeply remembered. Polio was still a crippler. Everyone knew someone who had it. You came of age in the '50s and '60s. You are the last generation to experience an interlude when there were no threats to Canada. World War II was over and the Cold War, terrorism, global warming, and perpetual economic insecurity had yet to haunt life. Only your generation can remember a time after WW II when our world was secure and full of bright promise and plenty. You grew up at the best possible time, a time when the world was getting better. More than 99% of you are retired now, and you should feel privileged to have "lived in the best of times!" If you have already reached the age of 77 years old, you have outlived 99% of all the other people in the world who were born in this special 16 year time span. You are a 1% 'er".

MFJ is ceasing its on-site production
" April 25, 2024 Dear Fellow Hams and Friends, It is with a sad heart as I write this letter. As many of you have heard by now, MFJ is ceasing its on-site production in Starkville, Mississippi on May 17, 2024. This is also the same for our sister companies’ Ameritron, Hygain, Cushcraft, Mirage and Vectronics. Times have changed since I started this business 52 years ago. Our product line grew and grew and prospered. Covid changed everything in businesses including ours. It was the hardest hit that we have ever had and we never fully recovered. I turned 80 this year. I had never really considered retirement but life is so short and my time with my family is so precious. I want to thank all of our employees who have helped build this company with me over the years. We have many employees who have made MFJ their career for 10, 20, 30, 40 and more years. We are going to continue to sell MFJ products past May 17, 2024. We have a lot of stock on hand. We will continue to offer repair service work for out-of-warranty and in-warranty units for the foreseeable future. Finally, a special thanks to all of our customers and our dealers who have made MFJ a worldwide name and a profitable business for so many years. You all are so much appreciated. Sincerely Yours, 73s Martin F. Jue, K5FLU" -- Daniel Curry A.A., B.A. IPV6 Sage Certified PGP: AD5A 96DC 7556 A020 B8E7 0E4D 5D5E 9BA5 C83E 8C92

Easter Bunny
As for how the character of the Easter Bunny made its way to America, History.com (https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/easter-symbols) reports that it was first introduced in the 1700s by German immigrants to Pennsylvania, who reportedly brought over their tradition of an egg-laying hare named "Osterhase" or "Oschter Haws" from the Old Country. Legend has it, the rabbit would lay colorful eggs as gifts to children who were good, so kids would make nests in which the bunny could leave his eggs and even sometimes set out carrots in case the hare got hungry.

March Submarine Memorial flower placement.
This has nothing to do with Sun Lakes Veterans, it's about the Submarine Memorial in Seal Beach. I just thought that I'd forward it for interest. There is also one in Phoenix, and in San Diego where Boot Camp use to be that is also well maintained Bob Schive Ron, This is WELL DONE! Thank you for reminding folks about the sailors who died in their submarines in that war, and providing a moving example of the simple honor we have of commemorating their loss and in tending their memorial. BZ! Dave Shipmates and Ladies, Ron has given us and veterans in other organizations to which he belongs a good demonstration of why we tend the WWII Submarine Memorial - West, and the simple, important steps in our monthly commemoration. arrl Proposed ByLaw 46

Summary from lawyers' analysis: Full PDF: https://www.kb6nu.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/K1VR-statement-on-bl46-motion.pdf QUOTE: Proposed ByLaw 46 is a Terrible Idea By Fred Hopengarten, Esq., K1VR Past Director, New England Division Why? ? It keeps secrets from members ? You don’t know what it says ? Sometimes, you can’t even find out what it says ? Prevents Board members from talking to old friends without seeking permission ? Can overturn elections ? An accused has little, if any, ability to defend himself before banishment ? It is illogical when it prevents seeking input from members ? Violates state law ? The goal is elimination of dissent from the Board. ? It is designed to be revenge against meddlesome Directors, and it would prevent new thinkers from being elected UNQUOTE -- Daniel Curry A.A., B.A. IPV6 Sage Certified PGP: AD5A 96DC 7556 A020 B8E7 0E4D 5D5E 9BA5 C83E 8C92

K6TAL Termination
Fellow Veteran Hams November 14, 2023 Dear Commander Picken and supportive members of the American Legion Post 519 Amateur Radio Club: It has been a pleasure serving American Legion Post 519 by bringing the Radio Broadcast History of Post 519 back to life after 51+ years of its being buried and locked up. However, recent unprecedented adverse activity by the District 21 Ad Hoc Committee’s move to seize the banking account of the Amateur Radio Club and assign three new signatories has put the future of the club in question. We are concerned as to the District 21 Ad Hoc Committee’s motive in doing so; particularly since the action was carried out with no contact, correspondence or communication with the club to explain this unprecedented sanction. After a meeting with the Amateur Radio Club’s President, Vice President, Trustee and members, a unanimous vote terminated/dissolved ALL activity with Post 519 effective immediately as of November 10, 2023. The club has filed papers with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to terminate/dissolve K6TAL’s amateur radio license and any affiliation with American Legion Post 519. Respectfully submitted, Tom McLean 11/10/2023
