Win 10 Preview on a Laptop with the ESS

?2 out of 5 voices in my head :) told me to go for it. So load reluctantly loaded win 10 Preview on my laptop so I could access a flash program only in win 10 to flash the iso file of win 10 IOT build for a Raspberry Pi 2 onto a SD card. Installing ?win 10 on my quad core AMD A6 laptop went well. After flashing the SD card I decided to try and see if win 10 would work with the Ethernet Smooth Stepper ( ESS) and my G540 5 axis control unit. ?The laptop previously had win 8.1 and had run the ESS in the past. However, when I ran Mach3 I was surprised that the ESS plugin wasn't there. So I copied it from a pen drive and ran it. It installed fine. I also had to go into the control panel and setup the IP address of the ESS and the Mask. After that I had to enable the plugin by resetting the devices on loading mach3 and enabled it in the config plug. After restarting Mach3 the wonderful FPGA screen loaded and Mach3 came up but the screen was blank. I then clicked on View>Load Screens and selected a screen and loaded it. I bench ran all 5 motors and they seem to be normal in all respects. Now if I can get the Rasberry pi 2 to run mach3 that would be great.

That's great if you can get it to work, we all like to see things getting more portable and more affordable. The only downside I can see is we are to a point where the software costs more than the hardware. That is unless Windows 10 is free and remains free and I'm not one to put much faith behind a Windows product.

Even the old Windows 7 is still selling at over $80 bucks a copy and that's too much for those of us that just want a simple computer to run our CNC machines.

I'd much rather see a native Rasberry Pi2 operating system running the smooth stepper or something else that's open sourced. You don't see many 3d printers being run on Windows operating systems and they are basic CNC machines at heart.
