Transformer question
JJ,
Do Not connect the outer legs together unless you like to see really big sparks fly and also have a need to get reaquainted with your shop circuit breaker! Use the outer legs for 220. Use the center tap and one end for 110. Does your transformer have a secondary? If not, it is an autotransformer. Then use the outside legs for 220, the center tap for 110 loads or visa versa. Thanks Mariss!

No, the only sparks I want are from my grinder! JJ, For a 110V system, hook your neutral (should be a white
wire) to the COM or 0V terminal or leadwire on the transformer primary, and your 'hot' lead (should be a black wire) to the 110V terminal (or lead). Tape, or otherwise insulate the 220V terminal/lead to prevent getting a shock. If you have 220V service, same procedure, except 'hot' lead to the 220V terminal, and tape up the 110V terminal. Standard designation, I was taught was to hyphenate (-) tapped windings, and slash (/) reconnectable windings, i'e' 110v-220v, or 110v/220v. I guess the 110V connection could be called 'half-coil'. Just make sure if you're using the 110V side, to be sure they are the biggest Pri Wires. Practically all designs of a 110-220V tapped xfmr, would, for example, if using 16 ga for the 110v section, use 19 ga (only half the size of 16 ga) for the 110 to 220 leg. When I designed transformers, I always preferred a re-connectable Pri and Sec configuration because fewer wire sizes, and increased efficiency. RayHex p.s. As you said, "...Be Careful... ---------- From: JJ <jj5412@...>I connect the two outer legs together and use them with the center tapfor 110v? Or use it half-coil <g> and use one leg and the center tap. |

I've not heard of a transformer with a center tapped primary. If, indeed, the primary is center tapped, use only the full winding at the higher voltage or either half of the winding at the lower voltate. Leave the unused end 'floating,' do NOT tie the two outside wires together. Now, if what you have is actually two windings (four wires) that can be set up as either 120 or 240 volts, that's a different matter. In that case, you tie the two 'bottom' ends together and the two upper ends together for 120 volt operation, or you tie the hi end of one to the low end of the other and use the two outside wires for 240 volt operation. -- Jerry |-----Original Message-----

Thanks, I've seen the 4 wire primaries before, this center tapped one

Pls be careful of your connections. Bear in mind that it's harmful
dealing with current . . . no TRIAL & ERROR for this . . . if ur not familiar bring it to ur nearest service center . . . no jokes! jc --- In CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO@y..., "Carol & Jerry Jankura" <jerry.jankura@s...> wrote: Hi, JJ:at the higher voltage or either half of the winding at the lower voltate.Leave the unused end 'floating,' do NOT tie the two outside wires together.can be set up as either 120 or 240 volts, that's a different matter.
