NAMES get together

Matt:

It's pretty early to tell for sure, but I'll probably be there
again in 2003.

Since it's noisy and hard to find people at the show, a CNC pow-wow
is an excellent idea, perhaps on one of the evenings. I was a bit
frustrated with how difficult it was to socialize at the NAMES 2002;
and there were a few folks I would have really liked to chat more
with.

If someone lives near the site and is willing to host, I'd say a
good CCED house party would fit the bill.

P.S. Who's going to NAMES this year? I know it's early yet, but I'd
like to
know if anyone's interested in a CNC/CAM software get-
together/discussion,
especially the TurboCNC and Master5/Mach1 authors... How about
Ballendo & his
book?

Ditto... I went to NAMES for the first time this year. I spent
most of Sunday hanging around the CNC area talking to Jon Elson
and others. They pointed me to this group and re-kindled my
interest in CNC and computer controlled motion (includes robotics
as well as machines). I haven't had much time to work on it, but
I'm slowly gathering parts and materials to CNC my Shoptask.

I live closer than you, but Cleveland is still a little too far
from Detroit for a pow-wow site.

Question for Ray Henry: Will there be BDI installs, etc., at
NAMES next year?

You bet we will. I only completely failed once last year and that was an
older laptop for list mom! Don't you just hate it when that happens!

I don't know the schedule yet for the two seminars that Roland is hosting
but anytime Sunday other than that would be good for me. We could even
spill over to the Motel after they close the arena doors.

BTW (shameless plug) I just received bdi 2.18 and a revised TNG from
Paul. For newbies, BDI is the Brain Dead Install of the Enhanced Machine
Controller. BDI 2.18 includes an abreviated Red Hat 6.2 Linux with RT
Linux real time extensions. TNG, The Next Generation BDI includes a
rather good sampling of Red Hat 7.2 with RTAI real time extensions. Both
include the same very recent EMC and revised html and pdf versions of the
handbook. I'm sending these out on CD's printed with an awesome graphic
done by Rab Gordon and Kevin Urquhart of Rannea Graphics. No beer
coasters here, this is a definite collectors item.<g>

I am checking with the NAMES organizers and there will be some other changes this year -

1 - The show will have BOTH sides of the Civic Center this year - Last year one side was still an ice rink -

2 - The display room just to the East (I think that's the right direction) of where the CNC demo area was will be a dining room and a meeting room - It has room dividers -

3 - The NAMES guys are checking on whether we (the CNC group) can use that meeting room after the regular show closes on Saturday - I suggested until about 9:00PM -

Don't want to step on anyone's toes but the CNC get together seemed like a good idea and if we can do it right next to the demonstration area in the Civic Center it might be even better - I will keep the group posted on results and welcome comments -

Roland, that sounds like a good idea to me. Somewhere close and large enough
to hold everybody comfortable, and some of us might bring what we are working
on to show and tell.

Thanks for the info, Ray. Especially the last paragraph.
I've been trying to figure out versions, etc, of EMC for
a while now, including a couple of posts to the list that
got no usefull responses. Your post is exactly what I
was looking for.

How do I go about getting those CDs - I know I need to send
you some $$$. How much, and what snail mail address?

Hi John.

Send a request to my email address with your postal address and one will
appear there as if by magic. The BDI 2.18 is still $10. The TNG is $30.
Shipping and handling is included to the Americas. You can pay by
PayPal, check, or Money Order. Bill (aka list mom) tells me that this
group is absolutely trustworthy so mention CAD_CAM and pay up front or by
envelope enclosed with the disk. If you are so inclined, you can
download and burn your own 2.18 from

Ray:

I'm gonna buy the disk(s) - my work PC has fast internet
but no burner, my home PC has burner but slow internet....
I went to the site anyway, just to look. It is dated June
26, 2002, and 2.16 is the latest thing there, no sign of
2.18. Am I looking in the right place?
