Getting Started
I am a mechanical engineer and have mastered the three cad side of design. I use to write g code 30 years ago when i was in undergraduate studies. I'd like to get a small cnc router like the 6040T but I haven't a clue where to start. Looking for help. I am slightly confused. I know I need a controller and a software for the controller like mach4. I bought an older computer with an 32bit os and a parallel port because I've been reading that I need a parallel port and a usb doesn't cut it. Please help. Can someone please suggest like a bill of materials and software?

An alternative CNC is LinuxCNC (was EMC2) is great for old machines, see:: <> Breakout boards to interface from the parallel port to stepper drivers are inexpensive, drivers such as the TB6600 for above 2.5 amp steppers or for less than 2.5A the DRV8825. I build my own breakout boards. Programmes such as FreeCAD or Fusion-360 (was a freee download) for the drawings and dxf2gcode to convert them. Malcolm I don't suffer from insanity I enjoy it! Can't help with the specifics of the router/engraver but this is what I have. It's only a "menu" and there are lots of other menus to try! CNC Machine: built from a Taig CNC ready mill Mach 3 using a parallel port connection Controller: Gecko 540 to run the motors CAM program to set speeds, etc. and create Gcode Power supply Cabinet to hold the Gecko and power supply If you can do your own Gcode, you may not need a CAM program. I am cutting clock wheels on the Taig but have done engraving: a 4 inch brass clock dial and finishing a partially complete equatorial sundial. CamBam can handle engraving. Mach 4, as I understand it, does not require a parallel port but does require additional electronics. Mach 4 is still on my "to-do list." You'll need some wire and bits and pieces of electronics stuff. I had to go to shielded cables some years ago to run from the controller to the motors. Each part of a system requires a learning curve but if you have mastered CAD, you have completed the hardest one of the curves.

开云体育I have one of the Chinese 6040 routers, among other cnc machines. It is a lot of value for the money. I doubt you could build a comparable machine for less money. It will even cut aluminum. If you opt for one of these from
another seller, make sure you get the fully supported linear rails
on the long axis. Some just have round rods. This is a complete
machine in one box, with some assembly required. You provide a
computer, and a bucket for the water cooled spindle. You will need
a mach3 license, as it comes with a demo version. There are others with USB connectivity and they work fine. USB
for CNC has come a long way in a short time. As to CAD/CAM, it's hard to beat Fusion 360. A solid modeling
program with integrated tool path generation. It even has a post
processor for Mach3. And it's free for hobbyists. Only $300 year
for businesses that make over $100k per year. Plenty of tutorials
on you tube to get you up to speed.

Saying you need a computer....there is more involved than just that. I bought a dell360 with a 256mb, os 32 bit and parallel port. But it seems that i need a 512mb video card for 3d model and large g code files. And to run darwin for mach4 i need it. Help.... getting a video card for the dell may not be possible.

Is Fusion-360 usable on Linux? I know FreeCAD is, but I'm
unfamiliar with Fusion-360. Bill On Fri, 6 May 2016, Malcolm Parker-Lisberg mparkerlisberg@... [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] wrote: Bill[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
No. Fusion is Windows and Mac only. I do have it running on a Windows 10 virtual machine on my linux box.

The Dell OptiPlex 360 comes with 2GB memory as the standard install. Here

are the specs: b-160-gb-4643659/specs/ I would contact your vendor and ask them for the rest of the memory. Also, if it is running Windows XP, do not connect to the internet - XP is no longer supported by MSFT and there is malware that can infect the system without your being aware of it. Running an anti-virus program does absolutly zero good defending against this. -----Original Message----- |
