Has anyone built an SPC display forDigimatic scales?

Yes, that's what we did about 10 years ago.
The weekest spot is an overlay - has to be lexan.

Not at all. Membrane switches ARE momentary. The reason I wanted to use
membrane switches is that I figured they would be more oil and chip
resistant.

In fact you can make membrane out of momentary by soldering momentary
switches into the rigid PC board, putting spacer and glueing an overlay
on top - you get membrane switch.
The idea of of making my own did occur to me but I didn't think about it
all that much. Now that you mention it you could use some of the wide
flat PCB mount "tact" switches and just stick some kind of plastic
membrane over the top. Hmm, yeah, I think this could work!
