The smallest Moglice package was more than plenty to do my Sherline mill
and lathe. However, due to the way I had my axes fixtured I was only able
to do the 3 axes of the mill and the carriage of the lathe. I could not
do the cross-slide of the lathe in the same batch (the opening would have
been sideways) so I will need to buy a second batch. It should be way
sufficient for a homemade mill or gantry.
If doing it again, I would ignore Moglice's dire warning against
subdividing the epoxy. If you're careful (and have a decent gram scale)
you should be able to divide it into 2 or 3 smaller batches. It is mixed
by weight. I ended up with 2/3 the Moglice solidified in the container...
I have not had the chance to run the mill much since I did the Moglice
retrofit (patio roof building is probably off-topic for the list so I
won't mention that) but initially the backlash is much lower than the
stock brass nuts. I do have more backlash in the X axis (.003" or so)
because I ran the leadscrew all the way out when I cleaned it, and it
almost felt like cross-threading when I put it back in (even though I had
chamfered and extra-polished the end of the leadscrew beforehand). Since
the release spray is just wax in a solvent carrier, I would advise against
removing the leadscrew from the Moglice, but rather just clean it in
place. Other people's results may vary, but remember the Sherlines use an
itty bitty 1/4-20 allthread leadscrew (except for the Z axis...)
