need motor for CNC (sherline)

walt smith

This is something I might try, but I still need a motor (right now I have to
switch the motor back to the lathe when I want to use it and put it on the
mill when I need it

What I actuly have been doing is choping up my cuts into a bunch of subs and
putting a pause in the control program so I can manuely feed/lift the
milling head. The problem is I have paint twice for motors and bouth don't
work. If it weren't that the motor from the lathe does work, I'd think
there was a different problem. But if the lathe motor works, I should be
able to find a new motor that will work--Ijust don't know a damn thing about
stepper motors so I have no idea what to buy or from who (I don't want to go
back to backtrack as they don't seem inclined to work with me on this)

Also, if you have any backlash on Z, by counterbalancing a little heavy (so
the Z motor has to push Z down) you could eliminate the backlash.

I have a sherline CNC set up from Backtrack. The Z axis motor is
shot
(works with no load but just sits there "buzzing" when hocked up to
the mill). I have pulled the motor off the lathe and it works in its
place--so I think its a good bet that there is something wrong with
the motor. This is the second motor I have had and Backtrack charged
me over $160 for it.

Now I see a LOT of fokes talking about a LOT of different motors--
and
I don't understand much of it. So while I'm sure every thing I ever
needed to kow is barried in other posts, can someone suggest what I
need and where to get it?

The motors I have have a mount that has holes spaced about 1 13/16
apart and a 1/4" shaft on both ends. the markings on the motor are-
Mycom ps468-21B 5,4V 1,5A #9845 1.8 deg step and it has a 5
pin
DIN male conector.

I would like to possibly get something a little stronger as I have
constanly screwed up parts when deep into the program the the G00
command dosen't lift the head (just sits and buzzes) and then the
move
command ends up feeding the tool into the part for a cut I don't want.

Thanks!

Craig

Yup, here's the problem with an open-loop approach. Wasted materials
and
tools, and maybe even injury, not to mention wasted time!

You might try just turning down the speed of the rapid feed a little.

Contact Dan at Camtronics, he will be able to help you I am sure, and also
has steppers for sale if needed.

A counter balance (weight, cable and pulleys or a spring from the ceiling)
so the Z motor is not lifting a big weight going up and then going free fall
on the way down would not only fix your problem, it might even improve your
speeds.

Sounds like your stepper motor is too small. Check out Dan Mauch site. He
should be able to get you a beefy double shafted motor.

Hi Walt,

You might want to check your PC's date. Y2K might have got you (msg
date 98?). And could you just order another "lathe" motor, if that
works?

good luck!

Alan

I will join the fray that says to get a new motor from Dan at Camtronics

Here is his NEMA 23 listing from on his products page.

Part Number Leads Holding Torque Amperage Price

23-019 8 75 oz in .7 $55

23-020 8 73 1.5 $55

23-032 8 126 1.36 $85

I would personally go with the 126 in/oz unit, but then again I am know for
always wanting more power!

While I was looking at Dan's site for the motors I noticed the following:

NEW! SINK- ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING.

Plans for this beatifully done Computer Controlled SEDM machine are now
available. The plans are the best I have seen to date. Camtronics is
delighted to be the distributor of these plans. The manual contains 80
pages of drawings, pictures, theory, and instructions on building an S-EDM.
Check out the pictures in the image section of this web page. Look for the
prcing and additional information about the CNC S-EDM in our products
section.

OK Dan, tell us more about it.
