Yeah, like the 7BA carbon steal tap (from England) I just broke! And I was being nice to it! I'm milling the cylinder for a Stuart steam engine. I decided to also mill a "practice" block (CNC comes in handy for all those holes). It has "more conventional" threading. 5-40? Right. I probably have a dozen each of the conventional 4-40, 6-32, 8-32 etc. taps, and I THOUGHT I had 5-40 taps and dies. Never found a single one. Easy enough to pick up, but in a similar error, I also THOUGHT I had a stockpile of 5-40 allen head cap screws. Oh well. On the CNC, another thing that could get you in to trouble quick is drawing the part in one orientation, and needing to have the "setup" in another orientation. Also, having the drawing origin different then a convenient point to "touch off" on the work piece. Alan KM6VV Tim Goldstein wrote: <SNIP> |
Polar Coordinate based CNC
What all would have to happen to allow a CNC machine to be based on a polar coordinate system rather than a rectangular one. The big benefit to me would be that the single most expensive component of a router/plama type of system is the slides and drive components (the screws or rack/pinon not the motor itself) for the longest axis (for systems of the size/type I have in mind this would be to move a gantry). But I assume that would mandate a change to the controller so it could interpret g-codes as polar coordinates. Are there any controller packages out there currently that support polar-coordinates?

there are virtually no hot chips getting to it. It is a little funny to type on and I would not want to use it on a system that I had to do a lot of data entry, but on my CNC controller I am happy with it. I will warn you that double sided tape does not work with it. The plastic is a silicone and the tape just falls right off. Re: Drill press & cross-slide vice

ditto !
I did that to my old, origional drill press. I used brass screws with wingnuts to let me lock in the spindle. I tried milling with a cross slide vice. I was able to take cuts as deep as 0.005" in aluminum. one problem revealed itself when wheil cranking, I rested my hand on the top belt guard. the cutter took a nose dive into the part. I didn't push, just rested, but the extra weight and the flex in the machine changed the cutting depth. I think i got the idea from this list or the 7x10minilathe list and someone advised me how to remove the spring safely. Yeah, somehow the accel rate got misconfigured and I had to redo
motor tuning. Deceleration on the Y axis was a little lower than the X and Y couldnt keep up.Hence the odd rapid Z safe move to the second set of pocketed arcs. But I still have a problem where it plunges into the material.... This is about half of the code attached, and approximately where it plunges diagnally into the stock. It's FANUC. MACH1 seems to like it (or then again, maybe thats the problem, as Surfcam FREE only comes with a few PP) The feed rate is slowed way down so I could pinpoint(somewhat) where the problem occurs. I've initially rewound the code in MACH1 and zero'd all axiis, then I jog to X0 Y0 Z1 and start the code from there. The code will run correctly throughout, with exception to where it crashes at the end of the portion of code that Ive included. If I let it run from this crash point, all the rest of the toolpaths are executed as they should be, but the "real time display" in MACH1 clearly shows the tool travel to X0 Y0 Z0 diagnally through the stock ,and then back up to safe Z(1), then it executes right from there. If you are not sure how much of the code processes before the problemthan it will just be wasting everyone's time.from just a general description and no specifics. All I can suggest is totry using a different G-code viewer program. If it displays correctly in acouple of them the problem is likely in the machine and/or software set-up.without having a cutter in the spindle or material on the table if I am not surewhat is going to happen and especially on a new machine/software/CADCAMspindle control codes and required dwells for the spindle to come up to speed Iwould just turn the spindle on before I start the program. Also I will cutthe part from wood or foam when I have made any major changes or am using abrand new setup. Another thing I do when there are lots of changes is dropthe feed override down to a real low value and/or single step through theprogram. This will also help if you think you may be experiencing loststeps. Taking a machine and software that you are not intimately familiar withand knowing what it will do and combining that with G-code that you are not100% sure of and running it with metal and nice new cutters it a great recipefor broken tooling.tooling that I have ever experienced. In my case it is virtually always a case ofidiot at the switch. I have learned that if I can not buy 2 or 3 of thesame cutter to just not get it at all. Nothing like having a drawer full ofspares to keep you from breaking an end mill. Having only one of a sizealmost seems to be an invitation to a learning experience.I'd getrather not take the chance of somebody stealing my idea before I abouta chance to build it. reach it ifCode to pinpoint the problem. you have trouble.to be a sister site to the CCED group, as many of the same members arethere, for OT subjects, that are not allowed on the CCED list.POSTING THEM. Building your own is not that hard. I could break out my cnc router plans and give you all the information that you would need to build your own. If the need is there, I could have a local company build several units. Bob Campbell www.campbelldesigns.com ----- Original Message -----

Re: Drill press & cross-slide vice

Of you are intent on this approach you will find that cheap drillI pulled out my quill, drilled and tapped two 10-24 holes pointing toward the quill, one from the front, one from the side. Inserted two brass screws with nuts to lock them down, and reduced the play some. The remaining slop comes from the quill spline fitting into the pulley at the top. In fact you can make membrane out of momentary by soldering momentaryThe idea of of making my own did occur to me but I didn't think about it all that much. Now that you mention it you could use some of the wide flat PCB mount "tact" switches and just stick some kind of plastic membrane over the top. Hmm, yeah, I think this could work! C| |
