Re: What ratio to use for stepper motor drive?
Bryan,
On my cnc router I am using 350 oz/in motors and Pacific Scientific 6410
drivers. I am using 1/4 step (800 pules per rev) with a flexible coupler to
a lead screw with 4 turns per inch. This

Re: What ratio to use for stepper motor drive?
Perhaps I should have asked my question in a different manner. What I'm curious about is what ratios people are using. I'm using 1:1 and it gives me more resolution than I need and less torque than I

Re: STEPPER TORQUE THREAD
That is a clever way of doing it. It is a system test and measures both the
driver and the motor.
Any thoughts about separating the motor performance from the system?
If we know number of steps and

Re: What ratio to use for stepper motor drive?
Divide the number of steps per second by the number of step per revolution.
That will give you the speed in revolutions per second. The multiple time 60

I machined a capstan that was a bit under 2.000 diameter . It was reduced
by 1/2 the thickness of the heavy nylon cord.
One end of the line is attached to a spring scale that is deadheaded (fixed)

Yes, folks! I replied too soon, before I realized he was talking REALLY-fast
rates, and not the 500 steps/sec. and lower I am used to. MY stoopid
mistake! Please ignore!

Re: STEPPER TORQUE THREAD
The easiest way to build a dyno is with a positive displacement water pump.
The input shaft is supported by beaaring blocks while the pump body is
allowed to rotate. Mount a lever arm on the pump

Re: STEPPER TORQUE THREAD
Use a long string, so that there is time to accelerate up to a fairly
high speed. You know how fast you are turning from the step rate -
and the motor eathier keeps up, or starts missing steps at

I know that serious people love servos, and I've seen screaming machines at Westec. But I wanted to do this all myself and I'm not eager to get into the complexity (and additional cost) necessitated

Stepper dyno
Since a stepper is a permenant magnet motor, you should be able to
use one stepper as a dyno for another? I have seen electric motor
dynos, but what do you measure, and how do you calibrate it?

Re: What ratio to use for stepper motor drive?
Brian,
You have such a nice machine,
you should consider servo's instead of steppers.
Much better for your machine, high speeds, low speeds, all ok.

DRO/linear encoder
Dear List,
Let me first say that I am in over my head and need advice. I am
trying to put together a DRO to measure travel of my Bridgeport knee.
The plan is to use a 2 axis DRO kit from Camtronics

Sounds like what we need is a simple way to dyno a stepper. Most of
