cant see parallel port from dos- found it!

deanc500

Well, I do feel silly. Its a new laptop to me and it has a funny bios.
There is a separate setting to actually turn the ports on and off.
Didnt see it before. Thanks anyway.

This is the older 7000-series cable, rated at 4 million flexes.

Something like VectorCAD or Dolphin can go from drawing to G-Code.

Something like Yeager Automation's ACEConverter can go from DXF to G-Code.

Re: cant see parallel port from dos - forgot to mention...

Thanks for the phone#. I have more info now. I just tried a
Parallel-port diagnostic and information utility from Parallel
Technologies and in windows, it found a port at 378H. Unloaded windows
and ran the utility again and it found no port installed. Is there
such a thing as a dos parallel port driver or something?

Thanks, I tried holding the control key when starting the machine.
This brings me to the boot menu where I can choose safe mode, dos
prompt only, etc. I bypass all windows drivers here and still no
parallel port. The dos sofware runs normally, but no pulses at the
port. Very strange. The help line guy at Toshiba suggested I do a
google search : )so no help there.

You could buy a LARGE one, but I never found a reason why I should spend
$70CDN on a LARGE cap, when I could spend $24CDN for two smaller one.
When the two smaller ones are combined the unit has the same uF that I
needed.

Yes Tim I remember the discussion of what the stuff
is made of and how to make it at home.

Do I know the ingredients?
Yup.

Can I talk about it?
Nope.

So as before I must bow out of that discussion. But for folks contemplating
making homemade polymer bearing compound... go for it-
and good luck!

I'll just buy the stuff ready made if I need more and concentrate
on the machine it is going in to.

Try and then pick Super Alloy. It is the
PRECISION
HIGH LUBRICITY POLYMER - BLACK 1500LFH that you will most likely want.

There were a number of people talking about playing with making some of
this
at home. It is basically epoxy with a lot of graphite in it. I believe
that
Moglice which is a similar product uses molybdenum disulfide as the
lubricating agent. Don't remember hearing about any results from the home
experimenters.

Tim
[Denver, CO]

Moglice

Randy Gordon-Gilmore

The smallest Moglice package was more than plenty to do my Sherline mill
and lathe. However, due to the way I had my axes fixtured I was only able
to do the 3 axes of the mill and the carriage of the lathe. I could not
do the cross-slide of the lathe in the same batch (the opening would have
been sideways) so I will need to buy a second batch. It should be way
sufficient for a homemade mill or gantry.

If doing it again, I would ignore Moglice's dire warning against
subdividing the epoxy. If you're careful (and have a decent gram scale)
you should be able to divide it into 2 or 3 smaller batches. It is mixed
by weight. I ended up with 2/3 the Moglice solidified in the container...

I have not had the chance to run the mill much since I did the Moglice
retrofit (patio roof building is probably off-topic for the list so I
won't mention that) but initially the backlash is much lower than the
stock brass nuts. I do have more backlash in the X axis (.003" or so)
because I ran the leadscrew all the way out when I cleaned it, and it
almost felt like cross-threading when I put it back in (even though I had
chamfered and extra-polished the end of the leadscrew beforehand). Since
the release spray is just wax in a solvent carrier, I would advise against
removing the leadscrew from the Moglice, but rather just clean it in
place. Other people's results may vary, but remember the Sherlines use an
itty bitty 1/4-20 allthread leadscrew (except for the Z axis...)

Best regards,

Randy

You can generate the g-codes from a .dxf file with ACEconverter from
www.yeagerautomaiton.com/ace.htm or you can also use FlashCUT to generate
g-code from a .dxf file. You can download the FlashCUT software from
www.flashcutcnc.com/html/dow.html for the 'demo' version. Either of these

I can generate the DXF's or just about any other file that Pro/E can
export, but what do I do with this data?

I wish I had to NC Post modual for my Pro/e, but no such luck since
work will not pay for my hobbie stuff.

I consider this as a sister site to the CCED group, as many of the same members are there, for OT subjects, that are not allowed on the CCED list.

Re: Confusion...what software to generate G-codes?

You can generate the g-codes from a .dxf file with ACEconverter from
www.yeagerautomaiton.com/ace.htm or you can also use FlashCUT to generate
g-code from a .dxf file. You can download the FlashCUT software from
www.flashcutcnc.com/html/dow.html for the 'demo' version. Either of these
will convert a .dxf file to g-code that can be run by TurboCNC or Mach1.

Hi, I am having trouble running my cnc control software in dos. I have
a 1Ghz Toshiba Sat Pro laptop running Win98. I can run kellycam and
master5 in windows but step rates are too slow. When I exit windows to
"dos" or win 98's version of it, the software does not see the
parallel port.
Anyone seen this before?
The software I am trying in dos is deskncdos and cncpro. Neither can
see the parallel port. Tried setting the port to standard bi
directional in the bios with no effect.
Thanks
Dean
