I have been checking to see my status on hangar wait lists in the area and realize they are longer than my probable life expectancy: ) I would like to build, but do not want to tie down the plane in Alabama weather (especially after yesterdays storms). How long of a process is it to remove the wings for possible trailering? I am sure it is not likely worth the time to do it, just wondering. Any thoughts or recommendations? Mark K B'ham, AL

Since I have dented top surface wings, I've been checking for replacements. I'm not finding .014 listed with Aircraft Spruce, Wicks and several others. Yikes!

Back again…with questions

Well…I’m back. Life took over for awhile but I’m now wanting to start on a project. Really looking closely at the CA-2. I have a couple of questions. What is the approximate maximum engine weight that can be used and stay legal 103? (Assuming it was built to plans) Is there anyone out there building the CA-2 as an experimental amateur built instead of ultralight? I would love to build it as an ultralight but I am “one of those guys” that just hates the sound of a two cycle engine, it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard. Sorry, I have other hang-ups, as well.? Oversize holes

Hello, looking for a solution for some oversize drill outs on outer skin. 6 or 8 rivets on wing ribs were at an angle; not detectable from surface, so drill bit wandered off center. These are not huge holes, but would have an open gap. I heard of using "Oops" rivets with a larger head, but these only come in buck rivets. I'm considering punching some washers, maybe in 12 gauge. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks, Fred

Hello! Well, it's been a while. Slow going - health issues, 60 mile distance to plane, yada yada. Good news on leading edge. Only Z channels were bent, along with nose ribs. I'm ready to cut and bend fresh metal, wondering if there's a template for the wood nose rib block? Check back with you soon, i hope. Fred

Fabric finishing

Good afternoon CA-2 Club Members! For finishing the fabric control surfaces on the CA-2, any of the modern fabric systems will work. The construction manual calls for lightweight 1.6 oz fabric as the recommended weight. I'm not sure that this weight can still be found in what we call "aircraft fabric." However, you can use Stits Poly Lite Fabric (https://www.stits.com/store/poly-lite-fabric-priced-per-linear-yard.html) which is a very light weight (1.7 Oz per Sq Yard) polyester fabric that is uncertified. This fabric is too light for a full-scale aircraft and is only recommended for scale models or ultralights. It has a very dense weave and takes only one coat of Poly Brush to fill the weave of the fabric. You will pick up a little weight per sq. yard with this fabric but the way the weave is made, it will require less "filler" to close the fabric so it should weigh less than most other fabrics when finished. You may be able to purchase lighter fabric, but remember, it is NOT the fabric that adds the weight, for the most part. it's the number of coats of paint and the kind of paint that adds weight. The Poly Lite fabric is available in 70" wide rolls. They even have an instructional video that will show you how to: Apply the Fabric Heat Shrink the Fabric Clean-up Tips Fill the Weave Stitching Detail Painting your work The video is free and may be downloaded on the stits.com website at no cost. I have watched it and found it interesting and educational. A "How to Cover an Aircraft" procedure manual can be downloaded for free from Consolidated Aircraft Coatings at https://www.conaircraft.com/download-manuals as wells as at F&M Enterprises at https://www.stits.com. You can even purchase a printed copy of the Poly-Fiber manual for $20.00 USD on the Stits site. This manual was written by Jon Goldenbaum at Poly-Fiber, Inc. The materials described in the manual for this process are sold around the world by distributors associated with Poly-Fiber. You can also use a Polyester lining fabric used in creating dresses and other items of clothing. This type of covering material has been used on many ultralights over the years. The designer of the Sky Pup used "dress lining" as his preferred covering material. The only problem with using "dress lining" is that you need to make sure that it has not been preshrunk. If it has, the heat from the iron will not get it to shrink and fit tightly over the control surfaces. Hope this information is helpful. -- Ride the Wind! Ken Adams, Jr. CA-2 Design owner

Hello, this is Fred with the ORIGINAL #0029 CA-2 plans. Thanks for the great news that I'm in good standing with ownership. My issue at this time is wing damage due to a wind storm. There is leading edge damage, plus a slew of buckling to inner braces. Looks like I'll have to remove entire upper sheet to replace bracing. My questions are- 1) Will I need cliquots to replace sheet when done? 2) Can dents be reshaped? Or must I use new sheeting? This is most concerning for leading edge. Perhaps use a patch? 3) What drill size to remove rivets? 4) There is also tail elevator damage, - I see no instructions for fabric covering. 5) Anyone have experience building a trailer for their plane? I'm putting together a Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer, adding a 4 ft section for a 12 ft frame, and welding braces to stabilize the extra length. I've had some debilitating time with Ulcerative Colitis for 3 years, and am improved enough to get this project going again. Hoping someone will have some answers, thanks, Fred Dixon

lowered seat

Help! I'm stuck... Building to the original drawings, a left push on the stick will result in a push on the left aileron push rod. When building for the lowered seat, because of the stick's pivoting on the elevator torque tube mount, left stick will PULL the left push rod. I feel like I gotta be wrong here... Are there any pics or video of a lowered seat configuration?

Hi All I'm working on some of my wooden bits of my ca-2 and I'm wondering if there's any pre-existing logos or graphics for the aircraft or even Adams Aero company- I'm planning to laser etch my rudder pedals before I put urethane on them. i can make some stuff up if needed, but looking for what might already be out there. For possible Adam's Aero - Ken, Do you have anything pre-existing? If I were to undertake a logo of my own design, is there anything you might already have in mind for color/font/layout? Would you mind if I undertook the effort for a few logo design considerations? Mike

I received my plans last week and have enjoyed going over them. I see pictures of the CA-2 that Delmar Preston built with the 1/2 VW and no N number. I am confused on whether it is possible to build the CA-2 as an ultralight using the 1/2 VW. Any insight would be appreciated. Mark

Hey everyone. I have recently become interested in the CA-2/Hummel line of ultralights. I have no experience with them yet (other than seeing them at fly-ins) but I have tons of experience with RV kitplanes and some with more conventional Part 103 flying (weight-shift trike and paragliding). I will probably order the plans soon (although I’m leaning towards Hummel plans rather than CA-2…) I have recently read about how the wing on the CA-2 is easily removable and attaches via just three bolts. I am intrigued by this. (I fly an RV-12 where the wing is attached to the fuselage by two easily-removable pins and I just love this kind of thing). My question for you: What exactly does that three-bolt joint look like? If someone would be willing to show me a photo of that structural detail on their CA-2, or how it looks on the plans page, I would be sincerely grateful. Thank you very much!

This is a great source of knowledge and information that we have available to us as members of this great organization. There is an excellent series on "Sheet Metal" which our members may find to be very beneficial with building the CA-2. I copied the list of videos from the web page and have them displayed below. Just ordered the plans

This project is going to take a while. I live in a condo. I need to find a place to do the work. I'm thinking about getting a generator and renting a larger storage unit. I can put the stuff I have in my current unit and still have room for the build. That will help keep the costs down. Not every storage place will allow me to do that though. As I look to the future, I'm wondering about an engine. I really like the economy of a 1/2 VW as well as the sound, but I worry about making Part 103 weight. 2-strokes are the alternative, even with the reduction gear they will still weigh less than the VW but they will burn more fuel. Cost for a new one is not much cheaper than the VW. Props take time. I welcome input here. I know I'll need some hand tools, a sheet metal brake and a rivet gun. I'll need an air compressor to run that. A bandsaw and a grinding wheel as well as a sander. I can watch Craigslist for some used stuff. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to speak up!
