Get better mobile phone reception and save data cost by using Wi-Fi Calling 2
Consider WiFi Calling if you have poor cellular reception in some areas. What is WiFi Calling? https://www.spectrum.com/resources/mobile/what-is-wifi-calling How to use Wi-Fi calling and make phone calls even without a cell signal Written by Melanie Weir and William Antonelli https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/wifi-calling 1) Wi-Fi calling allows you to make calls using a Wi-Fi connection instead of a cellular connection. 2) Wi-Fi calling is available on nearly every popular phone, and nearly every major cell carrier lets you use it for free. 3) If you have spotty cell service, Wi-Fi calling is a great way to make sure your calls don't drop. An Easy Tips to Make Windows Easier to Use 2
This tip applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. A Quick Quiz for You… What is the quickest way to access all the following items in Windows? Apps & Features/Installed apps, Mobility Center, Power Options, Event Viewer, Device Manager, Network Connections, Disk Management, Computer Management? A. Settings B. Control Panel C. Start Menu D. Hidden Start Menu E. None of these Who said D? You’re right! The hidden start menu, also known as the right-click Start menu or the Power users’ menu is the fastest way to access Device Manager, Power Options, Event Viewer, Disk Management, etc. You can access this menu by right-clicking the Windows start button or, if you’re a keyboard shortcut fan like us, you can open this menu by holding down the Windows key and tapping X. In Windows 11, the way you access the menu makes a difference. Above: The right-click or hidden Start menu (Windows 10). Below: The right-click or hidden Start menu (Windows 11) when you right-click the Start button. Below is the right-click or hidden Windows 11 Start menu you’ll see when you use the Windows key shortcut Windows Key + X. Do you see the difference? Underlined letters let you use shortcuts to select an item from the menu. For instance, with the menu open tap the Y key to access “System” or tap “M” to open “Device Manager”. Now you know an easy way to access some important Windows features with only a click or a Windows Key shortcut. Ricky

Web Browser Magic 2
Howdy, Heard too many customers ask me, "what's a browser?" Took action by making some videos. Here you go... 3-1 Internet Browser Basics (12:36 minutes) https://1drv.ms/v/s!AqrIbdLK5KZyvw5mU28replrFx9e?e=5OYS3W 3-2 The Internet Browser Catalog (32:05 minutes) https://1drv.ms/v/s!AqrIbdLK5KZyvw9I20DJ7OLIPC9P?e=hc37TI Proper understanding and use of the Web Browser turns the PC into a very valuable resource instead of a source of constant malware infiltration. Many folks just have no idea what they're missing. Ciao, Samuel

'Back to basics' 3
It doesn't get any more basic than this... What's the first thing you should do if you start having computer problems? A. Reset your computer. B. Download some one-click computer fixer C. Restart your computer. D. Go on a one-hour search mission to find a solution. E. All of the above. All of you who answered "C" get a big star! Restarting your computer is the first thing you should do if you start having computer problems. The next thing you should do, if rebooting doesn't work, is to turn off your computer completely - so now power lights are on - wait five minutes and then power on your computer. This little tip will be a time-saver for you - just wait and see! Hope this will help someone. Ricky

10 Free Alternatives to Windows 4
HELP DESK GEEK 10 Free Alternatives to Windows Operating Systems Plus, how to try before you "buy" Written by: Sydney Butler | Posted on: March 25th, 2022 in: Reviews Windows 10 and Windows 11 completely dominate the desktop operating system market, so it's easy to forget that there are alternatives available for PC users. Even if you're a gamer, you'd be surprised at how support for gaming on non-Windows systems has grown. Most of them won't cost a penny, and we've listed ten of the best free alternatives to the Microsoft Windows operating system here. Note that your current software may not have a version compatible with these alternative operating systems. You may have to look for alternative software to use compatibility layers. Check out the "try before you buy" section at the end of this article for some tips on making the transition easier. Table of Contents 1. Ubuntu Linux 2. Chromium OS 3. macOS 4. Manjaro Linux 5. Fedora Linux 6. FreeBSD 7. Elementary OS (Ubuntu-based) 8. ReactOS 9. Zorin OS 10. Linux Mint Bonus: iOS and Android Try Before You "Buy" 1. Ubuntu Linux Ubuntu Linux is a well-known desktop Linux distribution available, with its core focus on being a Windows alternative for most users. Ubuntu is user-friendly and hides much of the "technical" Linux stuff. Thanks to its popularity, Ubuntu provides a lot of developer support and a good level of support for Windows games and quite a few native Linux ports that work well on it. Canonical, the company that oversees Ubuntu, has a long history of supporting the operating system. One thing you don't have to worry about with this Linux distribution is that it will suddenly be abandoned overnight. While there are many exciting Linux distros out there, many of them have a real danger of fizzling out. If you've never tried Linux because you've heard scary stories about terminal commands and compiling your own apps, Ubuntu is a great place to start. It's ready to be your full-time OS, but it's not trying to copy Windows. So you'll get a fresh experience that's its own thing. 2. Chromium OS Chrome OS began life as a barebones operating system that acted as a web browser, running all your apps and software in the cloud. Today, Chrome OS is still a lightweight OS featured on Chromebook devices, but it's not reliant on the cloud, making it possible to use a ChromeOS laptop when you don't have internet access. It's come a long way from being a glorified way to run Google Chrome. Although that means, ironically, that you can use Firefox on a Chromebook now. Chrome OS is, however, not openly and freely available to simply install on non-Chromebook hardware. Instead, you can install the open-source OS that ChromeOS is built on: Chromium OS. Installing Chromium OS is a little involved and not for those who shy away from command line scripts, but you can build Chromium OS to your liking if you have the requisite skills. Alternatively, you can check out a pre-made version of Chromium, such as CloudReady Home Edition, which can turn a PC or Mac into a Chrome device with no fuss. Chromium is a great way to breathe life into an old computer that struggles with the memory and CPU demands of modern operating systems. While Chromium lacks the same functionality as Windows, if all you need is basic productivity, entertainment, and web browsing, then it's an excellent choice. 3. macOS Yes, macOS (aka OS X) is technically free, although you need to buy an Apple computer to use it. Well, that's not strictly true since it is possible to create a "Hackintosh" where macOS is installed on a non-Apple computer. This violates the macOS license terms, of course, and you need a very particular computer for it to work. Also, since Apple is slowly phasing out Intel Macs, Hackintosh computers will become a thing of the past soon, so this isn't a door that will be open much longer. That said, if you buy any Mac, even the cheapest MacBook Air or Mac Mini, macOS is included at no additional cost, and it's a great alternative to Windows, offering excellent stability and supporting Apple creative so

A friend needs help
This is her message: My computer updated ;ast night and wiped ALL of my work and normal files off my computer. All the wallpaper & tags I had made up for the coming 2 weeks are GONE. All of the downloads I did yesterday are GONE..EVERYTHING is gone including file names and all the content in them. Is there anyway to stop updates without our permission first? I have never liked that. Can you opt out of all updates? And why would an update destroy files? when you all get the time... Thank you so much. Have a bright and magical day. Hugs, JossieAnn

Can you advise/help ? 3
Hello, A longer message was prepared, but couldn't be sent from 'delete' ??? How it ended up there I don't know... It involves how to simplify downloaded remote harddrive and w7 harddrive items which didn't come front and center when transferred from a broken W7 to an All-in-One computer. Two months of no internet - previously, my computer guru at senior center transferred everything without a noticeable change from one pc to another. Jim passed away in 2019 - now , all other help failed miserably.... Here's hoping you can help locate the all messed up documents, pictures, desktop icons, music , etc files. Some show up empty or are somewhere hard to find. Will be ever so grateful senior netcanusa@... Nettie --------

Kids are Catching Up and Moving Ahead with Linux-Based Learning Machines #OS-Lnx #PC-Tales
He was 15 years old and very sure of something- math was just not for him. He paid no mind to the teacher in class because the lessons made absolutely no sense. Why even bother? The three had stopped by to visit me from just ? nearby. He was so very hopeless about the whole thing. Definitely a frightening outlook for a 9th grader. The parents just didn't know what to do. "He's just not good with math said the father. This helplessness was beyond me. What to do? Fashioned some special computers for the 3 and made them available on a "loan basis" for their edification. "Loan" means they might take better care of the machines. Came up with a strategy to get him back on track with a multi-faceted approach involving computers running two operating systems on one machine- Windows and Linux. The bottle neck was uncovered, and he is making progress. Math is now his friend along with many other subjects. I created and narrated 5 videos to help folks understand how a Linux-based computer might be configured in a way very valuable to students from Kindergarten through High School- especially in this time of CORVID-19 and beyond. Viewing these videos on a smartphone is nearly HOPELESS. Man cannot live by phone alone- contrary to popular belief. A tablet or normal computer are the devices of choice. Some Notes: 1) Linux is an independent Operating System like Windows and MacOS. It is NOT software to be installed on any other Operating System 2) Linux can be installed as a 2nd OS (Operating System) on a computer that already has one. When the machine starts up, a menu is offered to select an OS. 3) Some versions of Linux can easily run-on computers that are 10 to 15 years old and have memory of 1 gigabyte or less. 4) The 5 files presented for download are VIDEO presentations. Clicking on them while viewing won't work though they appear very life-like. Recommend that you first download load each file to your computer, then click on the downloaded file to view the presentation. Streaming the videos from my cloud site may cause a less than optimal experience. The ones that are caught up get to explore new interests and acquire valuable skills. Hoping that the young ones in your life might benefit. Don't hesitate to contact me with questions or comments. Let's make something happen! Ciao, Samuel Akpan P.S. The college-bound also greatly benefit from these specially configured machines.
