Mars animation

I put together 8 images from 10-08-20 to 12-29-20 to show Mars diminishing in apparent size as it moves away from Earth:

Re: Mars - 12-10-20

And dont believe focal lengths :)

I had an interesting experience tonight with a CPC925GPS (plus Celestron f6.3 reducer corrector) while looking at Jupiter-Saturn 1degree apart

With 32mm I could not fit the 2 planets in the same field when i put the eyepiece into the visual back.

But then I popped in the star diagonal and viola, the two fitted into the fov with a bit of room to spare

In hindsight i should have let one of them drift thru the field of view and calculate the exact size of the field

but this confirms what a lot of you probably know which is that SCTs vary the focal length when you refocus so it depends on where you put the focal plane relative to the rear cell.

From my experience tonight i wouldnt be surprised if the FL changed by 10%!

but dont quote me on that cos I didnt do the math?

David

seeing the discussion on Barlows here.? For some reason I cannot reply to the posts?? So, I'll try sending this online.

I don't have the Edge version of the C14 but this still applies.? I made up a chart while I was evaluating Barlows and deciding if it was worth it to get the ASI 290 for planetary imaging. At least for me, 0.09 to 0.1 arcsec/pixel is where I like to keep the imaging scale for the larger planets with lucky imaging.? I have had the ASI178MM for a few years and used it with my EdgeHD8.? I just got the C14AF XLT in April.? I also attached my last Mars image from November 8th.

I see that model on the website, something newer than I am aware of. I know Don sold the product line a few years ago. I have two of their Barlow’s

Makes sense if you just want to boost magnification a little a 1.25X.

recall failure?

Hi, Perhaps someone recalled a message and I've been sent lots of recall falure messages (perhaps everyone else has too?). There may be a setting in the forum which might need turning to the 'off' position.
no worries,
