Re: Focus Shift on HD after the Meridian Flip

Hi Ian,

I use exactly the same system for about 3 yrs now. and am able to get the optimum focus point using the reducer. I have the same trouble with focus shift and meridian flip any solution other than get a fork mount would be useful. I could otherwise upgrade to the newer my older Paramount ME to the newer versions that have greater meridian allowance before flipping. i usually only work 2hrs either side. But I digress any improvement in our present situation would be nice.

Eric

I have my 14" EdgeHD for over 2 years now. It originally had a problem with not holding it's collimation and had to be sent back to "C" where they "span" it - much better after that. I use it mostly for DS imaging with 0.7X focal reducer and Moonlite focuser. Everything seems to be very tight and sturdy. I focus it first crudely, lock the mirror then use Moonlite to tweak it. It all works fine even for long slews, until I do the Meridian Flip. After that focus is gone, collimation too is worse (though still usable). It usually is off by 100 steps or so.
Any idea what can cause such a shift?
Thank you for any thoughts.
Ian

Hi Christian,

The Cassagrain is of a classical design originally made by AE astronomical equipment (UK) on it's original gem. Bought it 2nd hand a couple of years ago for planetary imaging which I intended to take up once my major observatory was set up.

Cheers Eric

Thanks a lot Eric :-)

Is it a home-made Cassegrain ?

Dear Christian,

I always look forward to your solar and lunar images. They simply takes one's breath away.

Next summer I'll set up my 12" cass and have a go. I use my C14 edge for ongoing photometry projects.

Look forward to more.

Regards Eric

Dear All,

At last, I've found some time to process a part of the moon images taken last August 6 with the C14 and the Basler 1920-155 camera :

Thanks Kevin :-)

My observing site is 1500 m high. The seeing was relatively good, although not perfect. Video cameras and processing software are doing now a very good job.

Best regards

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

"The? DIY circuit I posted earlier measures ambient temperature and the temperature of the corrector then automatically keeps the optics above ambient."

"You could market that device, though it would not make you rich. <g>"

I know. In 1999 when I first posted the DIY circuit? for ATMers??there were no commercial? dew prevention circuits? on the market that monitored ambient temperature?and optics temperature and automatically kept the optics above ambient.

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

"The? DIY circuit I posted earlier measures ambient temperature and the temperature of the corrector then automatically keeps the optics above ambient."

You could market that device, though it would not make you rich. <g>
This is a common problem.

Stan

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

Also on my corrector I get no moisture on either the inside or outside because the corrector heated a very?small amount above ambient which insures no dew will form. The? DIY circuit I posted earlier measures ambient temperature and the temperature of the corrector then automatically keeps the optics above ambient.

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

"Are you inserting the camera into an external focuser or directly into the rear of the SCT?"

Direct.? Don't use an external focuser or anything else (e.g. no filter wheel). It is a pre-HD OTA with no vents. So once it is closed it is pretty much sealed.? Also, I use a front-end cooler (replaces the secondary)?prior to nightfall, so the inside?is?fully exposed to?twilight?humidity.? Maybe I should incorporate a desiccant into the cooler fan.

Stan

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

Are you inserting the camera into an external focuser or directly into the rear of the SCT?

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

P.S. I suppose the explanation for inside dew (before outside) is that the relative humidity is higher at the start of the night and is captured by closing the tube (e.g. insertion of the camera).

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

Unlike the open frame Crayford focusers, my focuser is completely sealed with the flexible bellows and mounting ?O-ring between the telescope and focuser. I? had a?customer in?Florida tell me that?my sealed focuser?prevented moisture inside of?his SCT.

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

Dew?inside the tube is not uncommon.? My C14 will often start dewing on the inside side of the corrector before it starts on the outside, which is difficult to explain.? But I haven't had the primary dew-up (or at least noticed such).

Stan

Re: Moisture on primary mirror - frosty morning

Here is a DIY circuit that uses the minimum heat so no dew or frost will form. ?
