Locking down mirror for Optec TCF-S

I have received the Optec TCF-S and as indicated in the documentation, the
process for setting the focus range is to move the mirror to a get fairly
good focus on the subject, lock down the mirror and then use the Optec to
fine tune the subject. The screws received with the C14 are just long
enough to lock down the mirror when it has been set as far back as possible
(hope thats the right term to use).

Has anyone had to deal with replacing the screws and what did you do/use.
This is a new enterprise for me as the scope is only a couple weeks old and
the focuser arrived yesterday, so I appologize if my question has not been
stated correctly.

Thank you

Jim Anderson

New Images

I posted some new images to "Ken Images" in the Files area. The new
ones are M13, M51, and M57. These were some quick exposures I made
with my new AP1200 mount. Really improved performance. The M57 shot
is at f11. Did it just to see how well the mount would track. M51
and M13 are with a 3.3 reducer that gives about f4 with the C14.

Comments welcome.

Moisture in OTA

garynburk

Hi all,
I wrote a while ago about moisture in my C14 that was frezzing on
the inside of the corrector plate. Wayne G. and Paul A. responded
with suggestions. I did try these with good success. Particularly,
by inserting a 1/2" piece of PVC through the primary center and
blowing low pressure, filtered dry air through it for 10 minutes, the
problem has cleared up. I dried the air by loosly filling the 1/2"
pipe with paper bags of dry silica gel, and put a piece of HEPA rated
filter material on the input to the small fan. The air flow was very
gentle, I did not measure its rate of flow but doubt if it exceeded
one air change per minute.

Since then, I've been putting the scope to bed with a dry silica
gel pack in the eypiece tube. In spite of some cold weather that
frosted the outside of everything in the observatory, the corrector
stayed clear.

Thanks for the help.

Regards,
Gary

Eyepiece FL and Secondary Shadow

televue102

I recall a discussion about certain eyepiece focal lengths causing
the shadow of the secondary to be more prominent.

Is there some coorealation between EP FL and scope FL?

Re: [C14] Eyepiece FL and Secondary Shadow

I have used the TV55mm Plossl at f/11 and with the 6.3 focal reducer and have not seen the shadow that some talk about.

Looking for Flip Mirror suggestions

I am looking for suggestions on which flip mirror to purchase. My image
train on the C14 consists of Optec TCF-S, 6.3 Compressor and MX7-C. I would
like to add a flip mirror between the focuser and Compressor and looking for
suggestions on the best for the above configuration and is available (no 3
month waiting).

Thank you.

Increasing Contrast in C14

ckellynetgatenet

Greetings, all.

In really drak skies the scope does very well. But I have a friend
with an Astrophysics refractor and we argue about contrast.

I cannot fix the central obstruction, and I keep the optics pretty
clean. But when I look down the tube towards the primary, I get the
idea there is light bouncing off the tube wall (flat black paint),
and
possibly into the rest of the system.

Some refractors use velvet interiors to provide superior baffling,
and
I am looking for opinions on whether lining the tube interior with
flat velvet or felt would be worth the trouble to increase my
contrast. Thanks in advance.

Clear skies!

I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT THE USE OF A LASER COLLIMATOR ON A 14.ALSO IN REGARDS TO THE MOUNT FOR THE 14-I PURCHASED MY TELESCOPE IN MID-1998 AND IT CAMEWITH THE LOSMANDY MOUNT. THE MOUNT WAS NICELY CONSTRUCTED BUT COULD NOT HOLD THE TELESCOPE AND AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO CELESTRON AND LOSMANDY I TRADED THE MOUNT TO A COMPANY ON THE NET WHO SELLS USED EQUIPMENT FOR A FORK MOUNT.LUCKILY THE OTA WAS TAPPED FOR THE ALIGNMENT PINS AND MOUNTING BOLTS TO ACCOMMODATE THE FORK SADDLE ARMS .

Paul,
?
I took the beast out tonight to a some what semi dark site called the Forks of the Credit River (just north of Toronto) as the weather man/women is calling for rain for the rest of the week.? The moon washed everything out (I think they call it a Hunters moon).? Could not?get even M51, 63, 81, 101 into view.? M31 was the only item you could see.? Tried the Pentax 5.2mm?on it and was able to resolve down to individual stars but they were fading in and out?- not stable at all.? Moon looked fantastic with the 5.2 and fit perfectly in the Pentax 40.? Jupiter was to bright to resolve much of the bands.? Split some doubles and waited for Andromeda, but she?hadn't cleared the trees yet when we shut her down at 1:30am. (have to work in the morning)? The 28mm worked well on everything else but all in all the seeing was very bad even for a clear sky.? Temperature only dropped down to 7'C with a breeze of about 10-15klm.? Some shaking with the higher powers.?
?
Hope others will have a better week and look forward to hearing everyones exploits.?
?
Clear skies to all.
?

Jim,

I don't know when you will ever get to use a power that a 6mm or lower EP will produce. ?The 3910 focal length of the C14 would mean that a 6 mm would produce 650x, a 5 mm 782x power. ?You would have to have extraordinarily good conditions to allow you to go that high without serious image degradation. ?I hardly ever get above my 9 mm Nagler at 434x even on above average nights. ?That is just my experience.

Is anyone using the TV 55mm Plossl with the C14?

Please pardon all my questions -- but I am coming from a life of 800-
1200mm focal length refractors.? This 3910mm fl takes some getting
used to.

Finderscope - was - Re: [C14] Does the C14 OTA visual back accept a 2" diaganol?

Good afternoon Jim:

I use the Celestron 7x50 Polaris Finderscope. It is a very nice finderscope
and can double in the role of rough polar alignment.

like to get any suggestions/recommendations from other C14 owners.

Perhaps an 18 mm Radian. Gives wonderful views at about 250x.

Since Johannes answered the first question, I'll answer the second.? I use 50 pounds of counterweights on my CI-700.? That is, two 25 pound counterweights.

If you buy a C14 you get an adapter for 2" with it. So you can use your 2" Everbrite with the C14 without an extra adapter. I have the 2" Everbrite too.

The second question must answer someone else.

At least to my eye I find some kidney beaning around the edges. ?It is very similar to the 12T4 that I have. ?I just can't seem to find a comfortable eye position no matter how I look. ?I don't wear glasses or anything and they are are the only 2 naglers I do not like. ?I did not try the 22T2 nagler so I can't speak for it. ?Several I have talked to prefer that version to the T4.

Either a Meade 24.5mm SWA or Panoptic 22mm. ?I have the 22mm Nagler T4 and don't like it. ?Either of the other two will give a nice FOV and cost WAY less, especially in the case of the 24.5mm.

Thanks for your reply Paul,
?
I spoke with my dealer and their response was the Celestron finder was acceptable for what I wanted.? I have the telrad already on the C14 - just wanted to be able to get down within 5 - 7 degrees of what I?was searching for.? So far with?the Telrad and the 40mm Pentax, I haven't found the need for anything else but thought I might be missing a better tool to find the objects quicker or to complement what I have.? I agree the Starbeam looks sexy from the uninitiated perspective (haven't seen one in action yet but size and from Tele Vue to boot are good selling points)?and I would look at using it on a smaller scope than the C14 (telrad on a FLT110 just doesn't seem appropriate :) .?
?
?
As for the eyepiece request from televue102?- My vote is for the Pentax XL28.??It fills?the cap with what I have which is
?
Pentax XL40, Tele Vue 31, XL28, XL14, Tele Vue 10.5, XL5.2

Jim,

Don't get the Starbeam! ?It looks cool but is a pain. ?First, it is VERY easy to knock out of alignment. ?I am constantly realigning mine. ?Second, it offers no light gathering or magnification. ?As such, on nights when you might need a 50mm or 60mm finder to give you just enough light grasp to see something, you won't be able to with Starbeam. ?Of course, all that being said, the Starbeam is what I have, and the reason I am looking for something else.
