Re: JMI electric focuser for C14 Edge?

Dan Cook

The JMI Motofocus didn't work with my EdgeHD 14. It just got stuck all the time and could not turn the knob.

What works very well is Rigel Systems nFocus For Celestron CPC & HD.

It's electrically plug compatible. Or if you want to use their controller, works even better.

JMI electric focuser for C14 Edge?

First, thanks to all for previous answers to my various questions.

Is anyone here using a JMI electric focuser for the C14? Any thoughts?

Again, thanks in advance for any replies.

I use a heating tape and a dew shield on my C14HD.? However,?I've mounted the heater strip on the inside housing of the corrector.? There is just enough room to keep it out of the optical?view.? I'm?using the shorty aluminum dew shield, as it is the only one with cut-outs for the mounting plate and an accessory rail on top.? The double layer of aluminum seemed too thick for an externally mounted dew strip to be effective, so I moved it inside and the wire is directed through the hole intended for a Fastar cable.? Maybe not an orthodox system, but it works here in central Maryland.? Lou

I use heating tape with dew-not controller (usually set to maximum) in conjunction with Dew-Shield. Works on most, but the dewiest nights. In those rare cases I use hair drier on low setting. Very gently.

Re: Recommended dew/frost heater system for C14 Edge HD ?

OPT has several options.? A heated dew shield is the most aggressive.?Using a heater without a shield may not work due to the large size/area of C14

I made a cheap dew shield using a thin, dense camping pad and some duct tape.? It works very well for at least 4 hours, after which a hair dryer can re-start the process.

Recommended dew/frost heater system for C14 Edge HD ?

I am seeking recommendations for a dew/frost heating system for my C14 Edge HD.

Last year during my Jupiter observation campaign I used a hair drier but it was kind of noisy in the middle of the night.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Focuser upgrade for C14 HD ?

Gary Jarrette

The problem with the installation of the Feather Touch mounting on the C14 is a simple one to solve. It seems that the flat area on the rear casting to which the Feather Touch is mounted by three screws is not perpendicular to the threaded focusing shaft. This is the reason why a rubber washer is supplied.

The purpose of the rubber washer is to allow the alignment of the focuser to be tilted when establishing the perpendicularity to the threaded focusing shaft. The problem is the binding of the focuser nut because it is tilted on the focuser rod because of the tilt of the focuser body. By alternately tightening the three screws that hold the focuser while you turn the course focus knob you eventually find do the sweet spot. This ultimately is perpendicularity with the shaft. You keep tightening the mounting screws until they compress the rubber washer to establish a plane that is 90 degrees to the focus screw.

Now when I did mine I was not happy with a rubber washer so I went one better. I drilled and tapped three 8-32 threaded holes between the existing mounting holes. The purpose of this modification was simple. It allowed me to establish a perpendicular plane by putting in three set screws in the holes thereby allowing me to tilt the mounting flange on the Feather Touch by alternately playing the set screws against the mounting screws.

This was the better solution because once the set screws established the perpendicular plane you would have a very tight connection not squishy rubber.

I do not know why Feather Touch does not drill and tap three holes to counter the hold down screws but it would provide a more stable alignment then a rubber washer which can flex. Set screws countering mounting screws is the proper way to this on a focuser which has to be adjusted within a few microns.

Mine has been working for 4 years,? no bind smooth as glass.

Jeff,

Thanks for that info. I was not aware of your product and novel system. Looks quite interesting.

For free advertising you might try putting a hands-on demo of your focuser on .? Would be neat to see in action.

Clear skies to you,

Hello Thomas,

I use a Monlite focuser with step motor for high-resolution imaging :

It does the job :-)

My research already:

I saw a Cloudy Nights thread about people having problems with the
Feather Touch micro-focuser:

I looked at the Moonlite focuser site but got a little confused with all
the options:

I see the JMI electric moto-focuser for the C14 HD is around $179.

Re: Focuser upgrade for C14 HD ?

Thomas, I don't mean to put in a shameless plug for Optec, but here it is:

We've been selling the FastFocus system for several years but it still does not seem very well known. ?Our system is not inexpensive but provides an extremely rigid and high resolution (200 nm step resolution) way to adjust focus by moving the secondary mirror. ?The primary mirror remains locked and the imaging package is fixed tightly to the OTA. ?This is the way most large, high-end telescopes (think RCOS) affect focus. ?

The system has been reviewed by one of our early adopters with his report on the website. ?I'm hoping someone on this forum might take notice and give a report to this group or on Cloudy Nights.?

We specifically designed the FastFocus system for the EdgeHD scopes having limited back-focus, but it's been used successfully on classic C-14's as well. ?You can read more about the FastFocus system on our webpage here:

?

Please contact me privately if you'd like to discuss further. ?

Re: mirror locks for a C-14

My solution with C14 mirror flop in both Hyperstar and cassigrain mode?was to replace the stock moving mirror focuser with a focuser that has no mirror flop. BTW ?no mirror locks are?needed with this new focuser. In addition collimation of the primary/focuser assembly is from the rear on the outside.??

Though the "Edge"? OTAs contain pre-installed mirror locks.

One of my C-14's has a locking collar that I installed when I switched to a carbon fiber tube.? The locking collar helped main mirror stability somewhat, but I still liked the flop stoppers better.? The carbon fiber tube is terrific; the focus stability improved a great deal to the point where in the summer with no more than ten degrees F. temperature change, the focus did not change at all.? I would recommend the flop stoppers alone--my two cents worth.

Re: mirror locks for a C-14

Software Bisque used to make a locking collar, maybe hard to find now:
