Re: C14 edge vs regular C-14 for Jupiter
I would never expect Celestron to be happy about being sent a mount in pieces.? Any warranty would be void and they could charge you additional fees since it is more difficult to determine what the problem is if the?mount?is in pieces.? I get mounts in piece occasionally,?but it is usually from someone who had trouble performing a DIY?HyperTune so that I have a good idea what is going on to start with.? Getting a mount out of the blue that has been taken apart and in which I have no idea what the problem is from the start would certainly not make my day and could likely cost more if additional time is needed to diagnose a problem that can no longer be investigated with the mount in pieces. Unless you are very confident?that you can get things back?to the state (working or not) the mount was in before you take it apart, then I don't recommend trying to do it yourself.? You could be wasting both time and money by doing that. Ed Thomas Deep Space Products www.deepspaceproducts.com? |
Re: CGE Pro R. A. Gears Stripped
Unless you just want to send it to Celestron for repair rught away then you will?have to disassemble it to see what is actually wrong.? You may be right.? I don't know about Celestron but many Meade mounts use nylon/plastic gears?that could easily be striped (or stripped?).? But also fairly easy to replace unless there is significant "pre-loading".? If the gears are brass,?the worm?may have?dislodged from the shaft, etc. I doubt that you have anything to lose by taking it apart.? If you can't fix it then ship all the parts off for repair (you may have saved them a little time <g>) Stan |
Re: CGE Pro R. A. Gears Stripped
开云体育No I am not sure about it at all.? I just heard the grinding noise,
and the mount will not slew in RA at all now.? The clutch seems okay, and I
assumed the gears were stripped.?
?
Many thanks for this valuable advise!!

Stripped ?
Are you sure about this?? "Accident" would hardly be the word for what it would take to strip any of the gears in the mount, worm/wheel or spurs.? If you have not been inside the mount to check, then it would be far more likely that you knocked the RA worm carrier out of alignment rather than even damaging the gears. If by some chance you did manage to at least damage the worm or wheel, replacements are available from Aeroquest Machining and I have installed a number of these as upgrades.? However, the CGE Pro is a very difficult mount to work on and requires a variety of tools that most people do not have laying around.? In addition, there are substantial amounts of permanent thread lock used throughout the mount that make taking it apart exceedingly difficult.? I work on mounts all the time and the CGE Pro is the mount I dread the most.? This is not intended to be an ad for my services.? I'm just telling it like it is. Ed Thomas Deep Space Products |

CGE Pro R. A. Gears Stripped
开云体育I
had an accident last night, and stripped my CGE Pro R. A.? gears.? I
am thinking of doing the repair myself, and am wondering if any of you have done
this repair.? If yes, where did you get the replacement gears? ? Fran |

开云体育Thomas, ? This is it, you found it. It was formerly called the C14 list but was broadened to include the Edge scopes. -Charlie Lasnier

Re: Two last images taken on July 18
开云体育Thanks Stan :-)
Yes, I have two 80 mm diameter fans on the C14. It does make a difference. I also added two support screws on the primary mirror support to improve the steadiness of the collimation. Hope this helps Christian Le 05/08/2014 16:26, stan_ccd@... [C14_EdgeHD] a écrit?: Very fine! |
Re: C14 edge vs regular C-14 for Jupiter ?
开云体育Hi Thomas,
Here is a comparison of the C14 and C14 Edge-HD based on the theoretical optical performances : Basically, the on-axis performances are equivalent. On a practical side, given the larger diffraction limited field on the C14 Edge-HD (and improved mechanical support) the collimation is more stable on the Edge-HD version. But this is not a big deal to check it out on the classic version. If I had to buy a new C14, I would go now for the Edge-HD version. Best regards Christian Le 06/08/2014 09:06, ap@... Thomas the general agreement is that the Edge poses no particular advantage over the 'traditional' C14 in that planets are viewed at the centre ie. not at the edge of the field.
Having said that I got an Edge 14 myself due to very good reviews and supposedly higher quality control on these models. Regards and good luck with the shipping of this (large) telescope! |
C14 edge vs regular C-14 for Jupiter ?
I see that the Edge version of the C14 is currently at the same retail price as the regular C14.
My primary observing interest is Jupiter. Which C14 would be a better choice for Jupiter? Also, is there a regular C-14 yahoo group? I could not fine one listed. Thanks in advance. Thomas |

Lunar pic taken on July 18
开云体育Dear all,I was blessed with good seeing on the night of July 18. Here are some pictures taken with the "classic" Celestron 14, IDS3370 camera and red filter. Re: Some lunar images taken on July 17
开云体育Thanks Stan :-)
I use the "classic" C14 with a X2 Astrophyscis Barlow lens, an Astronomik red filter and an IDS 3370 camera. The exposure time is 30 ms, I stacked 400 or 600 frames (out of 5000 frames) with Autostakkert 2. I simply do an unsharp mask, and then some curve correction in Photoshop.
