Jason,

?

I believe I purchased it through OPT. It is a small Barlow type lens that screws directly into the camera to give me what I have found to be a desirable f/16.8 f ratio given the small pixels on the ASI290M camera that I use.

Thanks Ken! I use a C14 with a ZWO ASI290M camera. I also have attached to the camera a 1.25X Vernonscope, which gives me an F ratio of f/16.8.

Re: C14 Edge optics?

Hi Bob

I'm also intrigued how you managed to get your native f11 scope down to a f5?
Unless you used a Starizona Night Owl reducer which can only be used with small sized sensors?

Re: C14 Edge optics?

Hi Mike,

?

When I collimate my C14, I start with the image well out of focus. I then use the secondary to put the shadow in the center of the image. If it already looks centered, don’t believe it! Then in stages, bring the image closer to focus. Center the secondary shadow at each stage until you reach very near focus. The image may dance a bit due to sky conditions. I have no trouble seeing the festoons on Jupiter but rarely to I see an airy disc. Getting an airy disc in a large scope is more dependent on the atmosphere.

Seeing astigmatism with a star could be proven by tipping you head left or right while viewing. If the astigmatism moves, have your eyes checked.

?

I sold my AP refractor after getting my C14 because the C14 blew it out of the water. Aperture is king! For imaging, I use my C14 at f5 and it covers the ST10 or ST8 perfectly. For wide field, I use a 4” refractor.

?

Hope this helps,

Bob

Re: C14 Edge optics?

Had a Meade re-tubed with the same problems so I took it back. The third set of optics are amazingly sharp. Had to really insist something was wrong but they did finally take care of it.

HI Mike

our club has a C-14? as well. We were concerned about cool down and have a cat cooler, and internal fans. We just installed vent fans in the obs (have a roll off roof) and have not had a chance to see if they have helped with the cool down. I accidentally left the internal cooling fans on for 3 hours before we started trying to image Mars on a good seeing night and got more reasonable results, but still am not happy with the images. Of course, we are 42 degrees North and planets have been low in the sky. As for collimination, we tried everything- but live video still looks horrible. The airy disk is impossible to see. Finally tried a Tri-Bahtinov mask for collimination, and it seemed to help a little. Still not satisfied with the images we get. We can't even use a 2x barlow on it for planetary as the image is too difficult to focus and when we do the images come out horrible. Not totally convinced it is not a thermal or seeing issue, but not happy with the scope's performance - maybe an operator issue, but after 6 years I'm becoming more convinced it is the optics.

On that note the images taken with a .8X reducer/flattener seem to come out reasonable, but fine detail on the Moon or Planets is not worth trying for. Love to hear suggestions on how to improve collimination - (note the jet stream seems to be above us most of the time and maybe more the issue)

Hi Brian,

A really nice Mars image.

I use my C14 for galaxy imaging using a 0.8x focal reducer. I'd like to do some planetary stuff and just wondered what kit you have attached to get your scope to be F16.8?

thanks,
Paul
