CPKC sells Panama Interest

开云体育

This group’s activity has really waned over the last year or two.? How about waking it up?

?

Oddities, like jointly owned railways that CP has been involved in have always been of interest.? Examples of different forms of them include the Toronto Terminals Railway, Northern Alberta Railways, Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Railway, Shawinigan Falls Terminal Railway (where CN and CP would alternate supplying motive power), The CN CP Niagara-Detroit Joint Partnership and the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad.? For a short while after acquiring the Central Maine & Québec Railway, CP owned a short operation on a Norfolk Southern line in eastern Ohio.

?

In the last week, it has been reported that CPKC has divested another oddity it partially owned, the Panama Canal Railway, CP’s second coast-to-coast route.? It’s 50% stake in the PCR was part of the Kansas City Southern acquisition.? Mi-Jack Products, former owner of the other 50% stake, and CP sold the railway a couple of days ago to Maersk.? KCS/Mi-Jack took over the railway in 1998, when it was still 5-foot gauge.? It was converted to standard gauge in 2001 as part of a major overhaul of the line, with ballast and rail both coming from Canada.? The rail was some of the last rail sold by Sydney Steel Corporation in Cape Breton, NS.

Certainly an ironic and intriguing acquisition for Maersk (a Danish company) given the Trumpian interest in both the Panama Canal and Greenland. Of course this sale has likely been in the works for months if not years and precedes Trump’s electioneering and sabre rattling but… it might be a useful bargaining chip down the road.
