OS: Parry Sound ~ Aug 2020 - 1 of 4
~August 10, 2020 (Around Parry Sound)~ ***CN/CP Ontario Directional Running Zone Ontario ; northbounds on the CP Parry Sound Sub and southbounds on the CN Bala Sub between CN Boyne/CP Reynolds and CN/CP Saint Cloud. CN uses their symbol format ¡°CN H10031 10 for CP train 100-05¡± and CP uses a Q, three digits and date ¡°CP Q111-10 for Q11131 10. For simplicity I will just keep the road symbols. We are in the Parry Sound area for a week as Hannah¡¯s parents have rented a cottage or ¡°camp¡± as I say for a week for all of her siblings/spouses. After getting into the pop the night before I had slept in and not really paying attention to the lineups the night before I didn¡¯t really have any idea how busy it was going to be today. Opps! Really kicking my ass for this as this was probably a banner day for 2020 in these parts! Not to mention it was daylight for much of it. Such is life, and we had plans in the evening. After waking up I looked at the overviews (nice to have access for both roads in these parts!) and I was out the door just as fast. Shieeet! Had I been up and trackside around 0700 (not to bad of a time earlier) so with that I had missed four of them first thing. CP trains 100 and 118 came off the Bala Sub and then CN trains Q111 and Q183 went up onto the Bala Sub. I settled in for the four southbounds at Rosseau Road. **video link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt8dPQt2TvQ **railpictures : https://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?userid=4201 **flickr : https://www.flickr.com/photos/47866988@N05/ ~MP 138.7 CN Bala Subdivision / MP 12.5 CP Parry Sound Subdivision (Rosseau Road, ON)~ 0848 M31841 07 [Manifest; Winnipeg Symington, MB - Toronto MacMillan, ON] 91 cars CN 3823 (ES44AC) CN 3176 (ET44AC) -53 mixed- CN 3032 (ET44AC) -28 mixed- 0903 CN Q10641 08 [Intermodal; Winnipeg Symington, MB - Toronto BIT, ON] 87 platforms CN 8896 (SD70M-2) CN 2601 (C44-9W) 0929 CP 112-05 [Intermodal; Vancouver IMS, BC - Montreal St Luc, PQ] 136 cars CP 8149 (AC4400CWM) -3 mixed/3 racks/69 platforms- CP 9779 (AC4400CW) -61 platforms- CP 8717 (ES44AC) 1018 CN Q11251 05 [Intermodal; Vancouver IMS, BC - Toronto BIT, ON] 193 platforms CN 2877 (ES44AC) CN 2850 (ES44AC) I headed back to the camp for awhile and then ventured out for a few more after having some breakfast. ~CN Boyne/CP Reynolds - MP 146.1 CN Bala Subdivision / MP 20.1 CP Parry Sound Subdivision (Parry Sound, ON)~ 1234 CP 119-09 [Intermodal; Montreal St Luc, PQ - Edmonton IMS, AB] 129 cars CP 8800 (ES44AC) -45 platforms- CP 8116 (AC4400CWM) -33 platforms/51 mixed- ~MP 149.2 CN Bala Subdivision (Parry Sound, ON)~ 1238 CP 112-06 [Intermodal; Vancouver IMS, BC - Montreal St Luc, PQ] 156 cars CP 8932 (ES44AC) -2 tankers/83 platforms- CP 8137 (AC4400CWM) -65 platforms/6 racks- CP 8051 (AC4400CWM) 1308 CP 9420-08 [Extra Manifest; Winnipeg, MB - Toronto Yard, ON] 115 cars CP 8935 (ES44AC) CP 8960 (ES44AC) -79 mixed/36 racks- After a nice afternoon of swimming and not missing anything I headed downtown for a couple hours to take in some action across the Parry Sound trestle. Self-Propelled Passenger Cars in Canada including CN equipment
2
One of our volunteers at the Toronto Railway Historical Association is Adam Peltenburg. Adam is completing his college education at the present time but is also an avid railway history researcher. Here is his latest great article titled: Self-Propelled Passenger Cars in Canada. It covers several different types of self-propelled passenger cars that operated on Canadian railroads, especially in the Toronto area and mostly pre-dating the more widely known Budd Rail Diesel Car. It includes quite a few interesting photographs of each one. You can find the post here: http://www.trha.ca/trha/historic-note-self-propelled-passenger-cars-in-canada/

I ended up taking today off to get some stuff done around the house and relax. I woke up quite early with Hannah as she got ready to head into the mine site for work. As I was making some coffee a late 119 called the home signal at Marathon, pefect! After 119 passed there would be a bit of a lull before the action picked up for mid morning. Train 113 would roll through and head over to Steel to meet 118 who overtook 420 at Jackfish. Train 420 would finally pass and head over to Heron Bay to see the TEC train. ~CP Marathon - MP 62.1 CP Heron Bay Subdivision (Marathon, ON)~ 0436 CP 119-14 [Intermodal; Montreal St Luc, PQ - Edmonton IMS, AB] 114 cars CP 8079 (AC4400CWM) CP 8576 (AC4400CW) -41 platforms- CP 8048 (AC4400CWM) -37 mixed/30 CP grain empties/6 mixed- *more newbuilds from NSC¡ They only look good once going west and then replace 30 cylindricals 0726 CP 113-14 [Intermodal; Montreal Hochelaga, PQ - Vancouver Coquitlam, BC] 115 platforms CP 8749 (ES44AC) CP 8861 (ES44AC) -49 platforms- CP 9708 (AC4400CW) -66 platforms- 0856 CP 118-14 [Intermodal; Calgary Alyth, AB - Montreal Hochelaga, PQ] 115 cars CP 8932 (ES44AC) CP 8158 (AC4400CWM) -71 platforms/15 mixed- CP 8830 (ES44AC) -29 mixed- 1018 CP 420-15 [Manifest; Winnipeg, MB - Toronto Yard, ON] 101 cars CP 8900 (ES44AC) **CP 6043 (SD40-2) CP 8906 (ES44AC) -79 mixed/22 racks- ~MP 64.6 CP Heron Bay Subdivision (Marathon, ON)~ 1038 CP 3TEC-15 [OCS; White River, ON - Thunder Bay, ON] 3 cars **CP 2241 (GP20C-ECO) **CP 68 (Accommodation) **CP 424994 (Gauge Measurement Car) **CP 63 (Track Evaluation Car) On the morning of the 15th a float truck struck the crossing at 62.8 in Marathon causing extensive damage. 10th Anniversary Webinar on Oct 1st 2020: About Toronto Union Stations, 1927-2020
If you are not on the mailing list for the Toronto Railway Museum ( subscribe here: https://torontorailwaymuseum.com/?page_id=42 ) you may not have been invited to the 7th and last webinar in our 10th Anniversary Webinar series. These are free to attendees but donations are always welcome. The webinar will happen from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm on Thursday, October 1st, 2020. Each of the first 6 online webinars was enjoyed by several hundred attendees. After almost 25 years of planning and construction, Toronto¡¯s fourth Union Station opened to great fanfare in August 1927 with a visit by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII. Over the following decades, the station would witness the Depression, World War II, the railway¡¯s transition from steam to diesel motive power, the decline of intercity and long-distance passenger trains, the near demolition of the building in the 1960s, and the repurposing of the station as commuter hub. After Union Station was acquired by the City of Toronto in the 21st century, a renovation and restoration process began that would take almost as long as its initial construction a century earlier. Our presentation will include an extensive array of photographs, maps, diagrams and animations that will illustrate the history of this National Historic Site. You must register for this event. In addition Bill Miller had been up in the area for the week so I had made plans to meet him at Neys and then work towards White River.
