Ending of caboose service on the CNR
There is not a specific date for either CN or CP. Cabooseless operation in
Canada was covered in the rule book until the Canadian Rail Operating Rules came out, effective December 9, 1990. There was authorization to run trains without cabooses before that, however. CP was first running them between Sudbury and Thunder Bay by late 1988. By the end of that year, they had 315 End of Train units ordered. The next area they implemented cabooseless service was between Sudbury and Toronto and Montr¨¦al. CN had 24 End of Train units by the end of 1988 and was implementing them on the Thunder Bay-Winnipeg and Prince George-Prince Rupert areas first. So it was spread out over months or even a couple of years. Cabooses were still used on a lot of industrial jobs with long reverse moves, with the odd one surviving today as shoving platforms. I am modeling the CNR in ho scale and would like to stop my modeling era when caboose service ended. Thank you in advance, Bill |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGordon,Thank for for your response. I read that US ?caboose service ended in the mid 1980¡¯s and in Canada in the early 1990¡¯s? which aligns with your response. I looks like Cn and CP dropped cabooses at about the same time, or close to that. Bill
