December 9, 1881 The "Golden" Spike is driven three miles west of Newberry MI to complete the Detroit, Mackinac & Marquette Railroad (later DSS&A, SOO, CN). For the first time, Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas have a direct rail connection.
