April 30, 1912 In a speech before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rudolph Diesel says "I cannot predict whether this attempt at an entire revolution in the workings of the railways will be successful at the first attempt, or whether it must be repeated, but one thing is certain to me: the diesel locomotive will come, sooner or later, according to the perseverance with which the problem is followed."
