April 8, 1867 A special excursion train departs Chicago on the first through run to New York over the new Michigan Central-Great Western of Canada-New York Central route. The train is ferried across the Detroit River. The route is uniform standard gauge. A through Pullman Palace hotel car is established between Chicago and Albany.

April 8, 1921 Canadian National closes the Henderson Avenue station in Ottawa, originally built by the Canadian Northern. Canadian National trains begin using Ottawa Union Station instead.

April 4, 1909 The Kensington & Eastern Railroad, built and owned by the Illinois Central is leased to the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend (interurban) which today extends its service from Hammond IN through to Kensington IL and then into Chicago over the IC.

April 4, 1910 An amendment to the U.S. Safety Appliance Act requires freight cars to be equipped with ladders, handholds and running boards.

April 5, 1995 CN North America opens the new St. Clair Tunnel. Improvements made in the design of the new tunnel allow double-stack trains to cross under the St. Clair river for the first time.

April 2, 1976 CN Tower is completed. Built by Canadian National, it was the tallest tower and tallest free-standing structure in the world when built. It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere.

At Burlington, train standby channel is 161.415 which seems to

cover a lot of territory.

160.365 is car control for Aldershot and Oakville which can be

used for work in Aldershot yard. This is Channel 5.

If a train is going to be working in the yard for an period of

time they go to Channel 7, 159.810.

If there is multiple activity in the yard, then someone will go

to channel 17, 160.695.

Trackside Guide Section 12 lists frequencies but it is difficult to

聽figure out the areas some are used in.

Hamilton Yard has their own frequency聽161.385, channel 40.

Then there are the M of W channels and Engineering channels.

Guess I'm just going to have to enter more frequencies and

see if some give me the chatter I want.

March 29, 1960 Revenue steam ends on the Grand Trunk Western as 2-8-2 4070 pulls a 50 car freight from Pontiac to Durand MI.

March 30, 1959 The New York Central agrees to pay the Illinois Central $5 million (2025: $55.2 million) for breaching its contract to have Michigan Central trains terminate at Central Station in Chicago. NYC has moved them to LaSalle Street station.

Trackside Guide Page 12-2 has the general CN frequencies which they sometimes use, I hear RTC asking people to use channel 5 etc quite frequently particularly if they are going to be tying a channel up for some time.

March 26, 2013 Hartsdale Interlocking, between Canadian National鈥檚 former Elgin Joliet & Eastern and the former Pennsylvania Railroad Panhandle line in Indiana is closed and the diamond removed. CN begins service to the single customer, Midwest Pipe Coating, affected by the closing.

Bill Shapotkin will guide us upon an excursion via the Toledo, Peoria, and Western Railway. In addition, there will be a Lucky Strike Extra concerning the 1970 wreck in Crescent City, Illinois, in which propane in a ruptured tank car ignited and flame engulfed the other tank cars in the consist. Much of the business district was destroyed along with nearby homes; 64 people were injured.

This will be an in-person slide presentation. There will not be a Zoom meeting.

Railroad & Shortlines Club of Chicago meets on the third Friday of the month at Chicago Union Station except in July and August.

March 21, 1918 President Wilson signs the Railroad Control Act, setting terms for operation of the railroads by the United States Railroad Administration (USRA). Railroads are to be paid rent for use of their lines and equipment.

March 22, 1957 Faced with the high cost of building a major bridge over the new St. Lawrence Seaway, the New York Central abandons its line from Rooseveltown to Ottawa, Ontario. In April, Canadian National will purchase the portion of the line between Cornwall and Ottawa.
