when freight trains stopped being scheduled

Subject: when freight trains stopped being scheduled
To: <[email protected]>

Exactly when - and exactly why - did railroads begin the practice of running freight trains when trains had a certain amount of tonnage or length rather than on a predictable time schedule?

It had something to do with technology - specifically, two-way radios - making it much easier to manage railroads this way, right?

Also, these moves happened largely before the deregulation of the 1980s, right?

I am sure that the timing of the change varied from railroad to railroad and perhaps even from line to line within one carrier.

I also suspect that the decline of the passenger train on many routes made this practice easier.

Thanks.
