Our next meeting will be both an in-person meeting and a Zoom meeting. If enough people from outside the Chicago area attending Zoom meetings become Club members, this will encourage the Club to make hybrid meetings a permanent feature. Dues are $20 which includes four glossy newsletters sent by mail. The dues renewal is sent with the fourth newsletter. We still have slide shows which will not be presented via Zoom.

The Rise and Fall of Chicago Cable Cars by Greg Borzo, author of Chicago Cable Cars

When most people hear the words "cable car" they think of San Francisco. Yet for one-quarter of a century Chicago boasted the largest cable car system the world has ever seen that transported more than one billion riders.

This monumental system filled residents with pride--and filled robber barons' pockets with money. It also sparked a cable-car building-boom that spread to 26 other U.S. cities.

Railroad & Shortlines Club of Chicago meets at 7:30 pm Central Time on the third Friday of the month except in July and August. The in-person meeting location is Chicago Union Station Room 107A. Enter at 500 W Jackson Blvd, which is between Clinton and Canal.

January 13, 2021 Grand Trunk Western 4-6-2 5030 is sold to the Colebrookdale Preservation Trust in Pennsylvania. The locomotive had been on display in a park in Jackson MI since the late 1950’s. The Trust plans to restore the locomotive to operating condition.

CN has had 50 on order from Progress Rail, AC rebuilds of SD75i, for some time, until recently progress has been slow. Perhaps production problems in the conversions, or whatever caused the slow delivery has been solved and the balance are starting to appear rapidly.? Nine units heading west at Elkhart Indianna are in yesterday's Virtual Railfan Grab Bag video and are certainly of this series, with possibly different numbers to those that I quoted.? (The numbers are not clear unfortunately)

CN has 8300-8310 model SD75IACC.
I can assume the units I saw on video are the same model.
And on reflection, the units, in tow, were heading west.

January 12, 1945 Bituminous Coal Research Incorporated's Locomotive Study Group, made up of representatives from eastern railroads and locomotive manufacturers, meets to find ways to combat the rise of the diesel locomotive. They decide reciprocating steam is dead, and to explore coal-fired turbines.

January 12, 1958 The Duluth South Shore & Atlantic runs its last passenger train between St. Ignace and Marquette MI. Other passenger service will continue through 1968.

January 12, 1977 VIA Rail Canada is created as a subsidiary of Canadian National. For the previous nine months, "VIA" has been CN's brand for its passenger service.

The detector is at mileage 46 on the Halton Sub. It's just north of Mainway level crossing.
Seemed to have been installed during the summer and finally got operational just before
Christmas.
Great if you are watching trains on the Oakville Sub. at Burlington West. Halton Sub. Mlge 49.3
and Oakville Sub. Mileage 32.3
You get 5-10 minute heads up a train is westbound on the Halton Sub.

January 6, 1918 The USRA makes major cuts in U.S. passenger service, saving $60 million (2025: $1.352 billion) per year. A la carte meals are abolished in diners, menus are limited and the number of dining cars is reduced. All passenger train advertising is eliminated (including train names). Consolidated ticket offices are established. During the war, the USRA will move 6,496,000 soldiers in 9,000 troop trains.
