Pop rivets for badge attachement
Hi all,
?
please could I lean on the Hive Mind?
?
I need to reattach a badge on my British Textron Series 1, J head machine. It was done with pop rivets and I wonder if anyone has a specification for these? Not of the suppliers seem to list them, only the drive type rivets so I guess they are a common item and I also suspect I may be overthinking this but if anyone has any help they can offer I would be grateful.
?
Many thanks

Hi Peter,
?
in all honesty I was being lazy to see if anyone had the spec but your right, I should figure it out. Thank you for your help, I'll do some measuring and see what I come up with, failing that a small tap and some little bolts will do it I think.
?
Hi Bill, they seem to be pop rivets not the drive rivets many are used to, be of an odd way of doing it to my mind but a lot seem to be like it over here on the UK built machine's, Thank you for replying though, do appreciate any help.
?
Kind regards

With my Colchester Student and a Hoffmann dividing head, I've done the same things using tiny stainless button head cap screws. The holes were perfectly sized to run a 3mm tap in, and the screws were readily (and cheaply) available from AliExpress. Not original (if that matters?), but look really classy.?

Thanks Andrew, I love AliExpress for stuff like this, carefully disregarding all the political issues! Bough a lot form there over the years and rarely been disappointed.
?
I think that is probably the solutions I'll go for...but then do I have to change all the others to make it look right?
?
thanks again for your advice

Hey JAMES , I agree with you on the rivets , I've seen them used everywhere ,including the many places they really shouldn't be.
Although the CENTER HOLE could be considered a modification to ASSIST in removal of a drive rivet.
With a tiny EZ - OUT .....?.??
Until it SNAPS OFF making it a REAL WAR !
Often in these type environments an UNDERSIZED lightweight or BLIND rivet can be used , it's just
tacking on an emblem or instruction.?
This often would then allow the MANDREL to pull all the way through. Not leaving any potential for the mandrel to ever back off and fall inside if there was an open hole.
Drive rivets were always HOPED to be lifetime devices , hoping you would JUNK what ever they were attached to , rather than ever remove them.
But the do install quickly with minimal tools ! ? |
Hi Marty,
?
90% sure they are not drive rivets as I have drilled one out and it's soft, pretty sure it's ali.
?
I think I am going to buy a load of M3 button head bolts and try that as it seems to be the consensus on here.
?
Got to be a nicer job in my mind as well.
?
Only issue is do I go round all the other plates and change them as well?
?
Many thanks for your help

Hey JAMES ,? they are pretty TINY as I recall ??
What size Button heads will fit ?? So many of them
have any even ~TINIER~ HEX trying to Drive them.
I believe I have mostly given up on those screws
overall. Popular because they're PRETTY in many folks eyes.? But they are just about the WORST if they are STUCK !? Grinding a SLOT down the middle, etc, etc. ?
?I'll definitely include the FLATHEAD versions with the TINY HEX. You'd think STAINLESS STEEL is better , until it TOO is stuck.
At least in this scenario , it's just an emblem .?
The device is not outdoors and no likely to be removed again for decades .
I got to deal with way too many of them on many Formula Race cars .?
I've come to view them like a current common solution for stripped out welded nuts on cars, etc.
There are those "Riv -Nuts" !?
Just like - VINCE - had posted earlier. I bought piles of related fasteners from Aircraft Spruce and related suppliers. Many "Captured Nut" types of hardware they sell. But NONE are as quick as POP RIVET type solution . Even though most of these fasteners are in fact held in place by pop rivets.
I seem to have spent nearly a whole career , repairing * Quick Cures * to problem fasteners.
Few things compare to a nearly inaccessible
, "RivNut" , firmly latched onto a bolt or screw and just ROTATING happily like a Merry Go Round.I
Still keeping a couple parts MOSTLY coupled,if not completely. But also nearly impossible to remove as well. The cure ?? Just SELL the car ! ?
Some of the designs have finally improved , but I've seen them fail like this on most every type material. I'll just shut up now ! ? |
