I have the same issue. It appears it's a timing issue.? In that, the RX audio is not fully muted before the tx is activated and we get a partial? audio feedback.
I am assuming your not referring to the actual tx audio, as that is controlled in the SET button.

If you want to use it quietly, make a termination for the headphone output. (i.e. put a termination resistor in the 3.5mm stereo Jack plug and plug it into the socket)
