Wire-up (Almost) Done #bitx40

Pat Anderson

Wire-up of my bitx-40 is done and installed in a Radio Shack project box, except for the headphone and mic jacks, which I am waiting for eBay to deliver.?

It was a somewhat painful process because of my poor eyesight and trembling hands. It is pretty hard to solder something you can't see well when you can't hold things steady. I realized after the fact that I should have purchased a headband magnifier with a light.??

Not tested yet, I will when I get the jacks installed. I changed out both pots for ones with larger shafts and knobs, changed out the push to talk switch, and used Scotchlok connectors in lieu of solder everywhere I could. I also wired the ground wires from the PA and Raduino to the ground lug on the BNC instead of back to the power socket. I assume that all grounds are connected through the traces, but if that is not correct, I could move them to the power socket - this was a concession to trembling hands, because the BNC lug was more accessible.

Sorry for the poor quality of the photos, but here is what it looks like: front, back and inside. No labels yet.

Nice! That is an interesting housing selection, it has been so long since we had a Radio Shack around here that I did not recall they had a case big enough. I used to get all sorts of cases, plastic and metal, at the shack.

After you get it running, you may want to upgrade the software to Allard's version. It helps the tuning and reduces the clicking a lot.

No Radio Shacks around here either, I just search Amazon for "project box." This one seemed to be about the right size. Do you think taking the PA and Raduino grounds to the ground tab on the BNC rather than the ground on the power socket will be OK?

Electrically, all the grounds are the same DC-wise (note, the heat sink on the PA is NOT at ground potential), and any single point ground, such as the tab on the BNC connector, should be fine RF-wise. So, in short to your question, yes.

Thanks, Vic, that was my assumption but not sure. The two wires I took to the BNC ground lug were the negative from the PA and the negative from the Raduino.?
