W8TEE VFO Board

Adrian

just received the VFO board from Jack W8TEE. All I can say is very nice board and can't wait for the parts to arrive. They say patience is a virtue.....I am not a very patient person.?
Now I feel a little guilty. The board was supplied for US$7.50 postage to VK was US$13.75 almost twice the price of the board.?

I just sent out another wave of boards yesterday and had a little heart-to-heart with my local post office about the high cost of sending to other countries. I also told them I sent two boards to different foreign countries from another PO and they took the boards. However, one did come back. She said I can try sending a board sandwiched between two heavy-stock pieces of cardboard and it might make it. Honestly, I'm not sure what to do.?

Bill, VK7MX, is going to order a bunch of boards and make them available to Australian and New Zealand hams at a price that should be noticeably lower than I can ship them from here. I don't know about Europe or how expensive it is to mail between countries there, but perhaps something similar can be done.?

Trust me, I am not getting rich by doing this and I know Bill won't be either. My goal is to create a board that presents more memory resources with enough pins to make it easier for those who want to experiment with the BITX40. Allard has just about maxed-out the Nano, yet many of you have suggested features that would be nice to have, but the remaining Nano resources simply cannot cope with the load. The Arduino MEGA 2560 Pro Mini on my board is a compromise to what I'd really like to do, but it is a fairly low cost option.

So...how do I make it less expensive to reach all of you hackers who live in other countries to the benefit of all of us? Ideas?

Jack, W8TEE

Greetings Dr. Purdum,
Is your VFO Board released as Open Source Hardware? If so, then the more technically adept can etch their own boards, and those that prefer not to etch their own boards can have them fabricated by their favorite (local?) circuit board fabricator. This would also allow people to modify the design, and share their modifications with others. Or, groups of like-minded individuals in other countries can get a fab-shop order together, to reduce fab costs, as well as shipping costs. Of course, not everyone feels the same way about Open Source Hardware and Software. It is your board. I just feel that Open Source is the way to go. Yet, people who would prefer to order directly from you can still do so, if they don't mind paying the extra shipping and handling.
Regards
Ken, KM4NFQ

Hi Jack
It is simple, you can never try to think for other, it is impossible and more complicate you can imagine.
Share all the information included the PCB file and let them use the best way to do it.
The profit never will pay your knowledge and altruism, if someone wants to get your board OK, it is a one way to get it, but if they have other way to do it, "maybe the only possible", to do it, good for them too.

I had the same thought. I am in the process of redoing the board because K2ZIA did the initial layout of the board, but he's so busy right now he doesn't have time to mess with it. When the new board is done, I'll post the Gerber files on the group site. I do hope anyone who uses those files does so in the spirit of Open Source.

Greetings Dr. Purdum,

Don't just release your idea and trust that everyone will adhere
to the Open Source model. Release it under an Open Source license.
A license gives you and others specific rights.

Personally, I am not a big fan of a light gray font on a white background.
It is very difficult for me to read.
I had to copy paste the content of the wed page into a text editor to read it.

In any case, no matter what kind of license you put on the design,
you will have to defend the license in a court of law to make it valid.
Very few individuals have the resources to defend every infraction of a license.

A few electronics designers/distributors release their designs as
Open Source Hardware and Software; Adafruit and SparkFun are a couple.
Both of them seem to be thriving?

The worst-case scenario is that the Chinese will produce the board
for less than what you are asking for it, and offer free shipping to boot.

I think you have a great idea, and I wish you All The Best.

Hi Ken:

Yes, it would be under the OS License Agreements. As I said before, my goal is to get as many of you messing around with microcontrollers and the associated code as I can, and this board brings out a bunch of I/O pins that you can easily play with. With 54 I/O pins and 256K of memory, some of you are going to come up with some really neat stuff that we hope you'll share with us.
