Too Much Information?

Hello

Apparently my earlier email on the subject of traffic level was mutilated in the sending process...so here is a re-send:

This BITX group was started way back when Farhan first published his BITX20 design on <>
and has continued as more versions of the original BITX20 made themselves known.? With this history it has become the go-to location for both historical and up-to-date information regarding all things BITX.? As a result? the group is International, large, the amount of traffic is significant.?

Making thread descriptions truly representative of what is being discussed on that thread might help others select what to read versus what to automatically delete.? This only works though if we use definitive thread headers that describe and limit what is being discussed on that thread.

Anything that relates to BITX of any kind is probably a suitable discussion subject.? Discussions between people might be seem as technical information exchange by some and as just discussion by others.? It all depends on our personal interest and involvement.? The members of this group include persons with all levels of technical and non-technical expertise.? The group has a history and reputation of being friendly and helpful to others, and of discussing everything even remotely related to BITX. ? If we were to narrow the discussion parameters it might decrease the value of the group as a comprehensive repository of BITX information of all types.

Arv,

I agree, any discussion related to the Bitx20 should be encouraged. ?As Doug W suggests, getting a daily summary via email then using topic view on the groups.io website should make it easy to quickly browse for?

It's difficult to search all messages using the search tool provided by groups.io. ?I'd prefer to write custom python scripts using regular expressions to search the through the messages. ?I looked over the FAQ on groups.io, they do say we can download all messages for offline use. ? ?But following the instructions given there, I could not download the messages. ?Perhaps that is only allowed to the group owner? ?I tried sending a query to groups.io support a couple weeks ago, no response.

Would it be possible to do a onetime download of all messages thus far and store it somewhere that I can access it? ?Then I'll turn on daily digests from here on out so I can store them locally as email.

Since the group was moved to groups.io I have not had that time ( or interest ) to learn all the features of that system. ?Maybe one of the other admin's knows if or how that might be possible. ?

The amount of stored data since the first BITX would be huge because it includes many discussions as each new design became available. ?BITX20, BITX20A, BITX17A, MKARS-80, BITX40A, BITX-V3, Minima, BINGO, BITX-40, and many more designs are represented in the history.

Am hoping one of the other admins could look into this. ?Having learned to program on a PDP-8, ?I agree it would be huge. ?The kids today would not. ?When we hit the GByte limit a few months ago, it was images that took up most of that, messages are on the order of a couple hundred MBytes. ?At current prices per GByte for a USB flash drive, that's about $0.10 worth. ?And could transfer in seconds for those with a decent internet connection. ?

It needs to move to a forum.

Messages are all the same URL except the final incrementing integer, will be trivial to create a script to grab them one by one. ?I'm happy enough with the current organization of the group. ?If somebody wants something different, they can go off and create (and administer) it.

We must experiment with the sub group feature.
