Seperate group for uBITX ?

Do you think we should have a seperate IO group set up for the uBITX project?

Folk talking BITX20 or BITX40 problems could get lost in the fog of the huge expected traffic that will get created when the uBITX gets shipped out and we all start working on them.

Just a thought anyway, don't all leap down at me!

Seems like a good candidate for a new #ubitx tag. As long as messages are well curated by a moderator, it should be easy to keep things straight.

Periodically there are suggestions to make competing groups for BITX, and for various
BITX versions.? Seems to me that this would disperse the information and potentially
make useful information unavailable unless one subscribes to all the different BITX
groups.

BITX versions all share some commonality in design and in user base.? Each BITX
version builds on prior versions.? Having all the information together should be
educational and informational for the whole group.?

Discussion group email activity has been running around 50 messages per 12 hours.?
It varies up and down by which day of the week and what the hot topic might be for a
particular day.? Right now email activity is a bit higher due to interest in the new
uBITX transceiver.? It may even go a bit higher as uBITX units begin arriving and work
starts to mount then in chassis and start on-air activity.?

Moderator activity usually involves manually authorizing 4 or 5 new subscribers per
day, but with the uBITX becoming available this has risen to around 20 new members
per day.? There are only 1 or 2 subscribers who are on the moderation list and require
manual authorization of their messages.?

Due to old information still being available on various sites, a small number of people
still try to subscribe to the old Yahoo Groups based BITX20 group.? When that happens
the moderators usually send a response to the individual telling him/her that the group
has moved and that the new group page is at?? /g/BITX20

It is relatively easy to start new and parallel discussion groups, but they do require
active and dedicated moderators who are able and willing to devote the time and
effort to keep them running well.?

FWIW, Groups.IO supports the option of subgroups.

Subscribers to the main group can choose to join (or not join ) a sub group and set email preferences independently of the main group.

I like this idea, it's hard enough for folks to stay on topic in a thread!

?I think Hans Summers set up this group, I would be interested hearing his thoughts, otherwise someone may start me walking the plank.

IMHO a subgroup would be the appropriate option.?

Just my 2 cents.

If somebody among those who wish to fork to a uBitx-only group?
is willing to administer the new group, this might even happen.
At least we would lose all those posts from people who wish to start a new group. ?;-)

Me, I don't see enough difference between the Bitx40 and the uBitx
to make it worth the bother. ?Most of the Bitx40 traffic here will apply to the uBitx, and vice-versa.
If I were worried about the volume of posts (I am not), I'd be more concerned with non *Bitx* traffic.
This forum has been in existence since 2004, and has successfully covered a large number of Bitx variants
The group is named after a variant that we now see little mention of.
? ??/g/BITX20/message/2

I expect to be staying put right here in groups.io/Bitx20.

Yes. This is a great feature of the platform.

I haven't looked into how subgroups work here,?
and missed that particular detail in my previous rant.

Does this platform support different forums like other BBSs?? Then you could have separate forums for the different rigs, maybe antennas, QSOs, for sale/trade, and so forth.

I agree that a separate group is appropriate.

We already have a group that covers all of the BitX units. I have enough email
without joining another group. I am against starting another group. My comments and
suggestions will be found on this BitX20 group.

Separate groups and lose the cross-pollination that happens between the BITX variants? I think I'm against it. Now, if this were web forum and I was the moderator, I?would support creating a different section just for the uBITX. But in web forums, people join the *whole* forum and then post in the topic that interests them the most. If a sub-group would do that, then maybe I'd support it. But I'd?really hate for people to have to join two entirely different groups for these closely related devices.

As someone who has to stretch to learn anything 'new'....certified....I keep screaming not anything new in 'how' I get the new info I want.....

So on that note, please, no, new nothing. (now please give us new radios, more, more....)

I also have not looked into sub groups, as I ask myself why?

What I have pondered is this: hashtags.....

I have a groups.io group for emailing purposes for meetings for a local group. ?It is new and it, I believe will serve me well in what I want it do. ?What I discovered is that as admin I can set hashtags as mandatory, that is, every new topic created must be assigned at least one hashtag. ?Another setting I choose was that only moderators could create hashtags.

That way for my limited purpose group, which will always be small, and have just a handful of messages. ?Management controls the sorting. I will be able to sort and find what I want. ?And hopefully so will everyone else.

I have only used the 'search' feature of groups.io sporadically with limited success. ?I believe without digging deeper, hashtags are the what I would choose.

Sounds to me like a sub-group would be worth trying out? It sounds like it was built for this exact use case.

A few key points from: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Subgroups

* Members of subgroups are also members of the main group.?

* Members of main groups are not necessarily members of a subgroup.?

Adding a sub-group results in a new mail alias. For example, if we added "ubitx" we would have "[email protected]" for the main group and "[email protected]". Subscribers can then optionally subscribe to the sub-group. It sounds like a perfect solution to me.

Now, where's a moderator when you need one? :)

I'm glad it sounds good to you. I, for one, will not be subscribing to
the sub groups and I'd bet I'm not the only one. Then if/when it gets too
splintered and disorganized, I'll just unsubscribe.

Vince.

Great idea!
I like the mandatory hashtag thing, assuming it is obvious how to add them while creating ?post.
I assume groups.io allows me to screen in and/or screen out particular hashtags for reading.
