I captured the schematics from Ashar Farhans FDIM 2021 presentation "sBITX - An Open-Source SDR the YOU Can Hack!" So I started hacking! Attached is a rendering of my Sbitx board. The x-tals, transformers and coils are through hole components and will be mounted on the opposite side of the other components. RF-filter and tx-amplifier will be on another board. In the first setup I will use the lpf and bpf from qrplabs. Size of the board is 50mm by 80mm. I will mill and drill the board tomorrow and then begin mounting components. I use an AudioInjector board that sits on top of a RPi4 and I can see a nice peak on the screen when injecting a tone. So the receive part of the software is working. The setup and compile was very easy. I haven't tried the transmit part yet. 73 de oz9ny, Niels |

As I have one, and for like a dollar more in cost, it might be more productive to use a better processor than engage in the sport and raw challenge of squeezing the last cycle out of the Nano.? Yes, i just got the digital board going. It works well on its own. I am going to plug it into the ubitx to test it out. I am planning to get a few made and populated (there are two, hard to solder ICs on it).? I ran into problems with the switching regulator but it is under control, i presume. I was just thinking - kitting up a project like this is a lot of work. What if it was possible to send a Bill of Materials as a disk file - and we then submit that BOM to one of the major parts vendors - say Digikey or Mouser? As one operation?

Jerry, nice idea, but won’t work. Companies like Mouser, Digi-Key and others’ warehouse personnel are only trained to pick parts by their part number, not work from a BOM and there would be far too many pick errors if they would even accept your order in the first place. They want EXACT manufacturers part numbers at a bare minimum but to get the order right, they really need their own part numbers. Speaking from many years dealing with them, especially Mouser, Digi-Key and Tayda.

One catch is that the economies of scale of buying SMD parts can be huge. It's sometimes cheaper to buy 10 parts than to buy 2, and sometimes cheaper to buy 100 parts than to buy 20. The unit price literally goes down by a factor of ten when you compare buying 100 rather than one. On the other hand, kitting something with a significant number of SMD parts is a real pain. You have to tag a lot of the tapes, especially the chip capacitors, because the parts have NO identifying marks; there is no way to identify them visually. The sBITX is a simple hybrid SDR; it uses a conversion to 27 MHz, a crystal filter there, and then downconversion to a near-zero IF where the signal goes into an audio ADC. The talk first presents a modification of the uBITX, then goes on to show a new design that Farhan is working on.
