Recycled case for uBitx
Many years ago I talked my Junior High shop teacher into letting me build a Heathkit Tower (aka Benton Harbor Lunchbox) in place of his lame project. It was a nice little rog for the time. Over the decades the Tower and the popularity of 2 meter AM disappeared. Last year I picked up a dead Lunchbox to recycle into a new project.
I removed the chassis, thoroughly cleaned the case, replaced the speaker and installed the uBitx. I still need smaller washers for the panel mounts, to fit knobs and install indicator leds. I also plan to add an audio filter to use in CW mode. ?????? Bob |

A perfect solution for a BitX case.? Check out the flea markets for old CB transceivers with front-firing speakers.? They make great BitX cases and have some retro styling that adds interest! Bert N8NN -----Original Message----- |
Thanks for the comments.
I have some knobs. I just need to adapt them to the uBITX shafts. I'm going to blame the spell checker for turning "Twoer" to "Tower". Unfortunately the uBitx board doesn't quit fit mounted horizontally. I had to mount the board vertically to the case back. I don't think that that is a problem except for heat sink efficiency. I think that the convection flow is less in this orientation with the heat sink back blocking air flow. |

Mounting the board vertically and adding a small fan may be a good thing. It will allow the fan to pull or push air horizontally across the heat sink fins.? Thought comes to mind that it might be interesting to activate the fan through some sort of PTT activated quick-on and slow-off control so that there would be a holdover period to insure adequate cooling. Since there is a separate power lead for the RF PA section this provides an option of adding a switch to turn the RF PA voltage off during testing when the antenna might be disconnected or when it is not appropriate to radiate a signal.
