Raduino replacement #bitx20

Mike aka KC2WVB

I ordered both the 40 meter and 80-10 meter BitX transceivers and assembled both radios this past weekend. The 40 meter rig is functioning perfectly. The uBitX all-band rig strongly suggests its Raduino component is defective. It neither tunes nor enters properly into the menu.
I would like to acquire a replacement Raduino for the uBitx so that it does not serve as a paper weight on my desk. I have graduate and undergraduate degrees in Mathematics not Electronics so while I can prove Pi is a transcendental number prior to using it in a simple equation for calculating the cutoff frequency of a low pass filter I am not necessarily at that high of a proficiency level in what is for me the hobby of electronics. Therefore, so that I can have an operational uBitX as I take the time to develop skills with respect to these fine radios could someone please point me in the direction of obtaining a replacement Raduino for the uBitX that is complete with installed software so that I can swap it with the defective board?

HFsignals will sell a Raduino to you for $25.
Be sure to get one configured and programmed for the uBitx, not for the Bitx40.
You can adapt the Bitx40 Raduino for uBitx use, but would require a new connector on the bottom (soldering) and uBitx firmware (programming).

Or, go talk to Bo:? /g/BITX20/message/50125

I don't see the Raduino as a buy option on hfsignals.com

Thanks Jerry. I did not see a click to order button on HF Signals web page nor did I see an email address for special orders like this. Did I miss what is there or did their page change?

I kind of thought there was a buy option, and that maybe it was removed when they redid the website for the uBitx.
Special address is in the second paragraph here:??

I think you should ask Bo first.
He wants a uBitx without a Raduino.
A match made in heaven.

If the rig really did arrive non-functional and this was not some miswire issue,?hfsignals should at least be told

Thanks, I will talk to Bo about this. The email address listed on the help page is an error too. The address that reaches them is: teamhfsigs@...

Good idea, Bo.?

The only thing I worry about is, what if there is more than just a Raduino that is at issue with the one I received. I don't want to sell you junk.?
If you were nearby in NY State I'd hand deliver it to you and if there was an issue I'd just take it back. To mail it back and forth cross country, should there be an issue with it, becomes why did we bother fast.

I sent teamhfsigs@... a request at 1pm NY time today. I'll give them a day or two to see if they can ship out the part. If not and your still willing then I'll pass the one I have to you if you want it.

Just saw an idea for a use for the Raduino so I'll order a whole kit.?
You're right you don't know for sure where the problem is.

Ain't this a fun project??

Sure, its fun. Just like girls used to be.?

I may just order another whole kit myself too. I can always build an analog VFO for the one I have. That would keep me out of trouble.

Best wishes.

You must be an old fart like me.
Nowadays the 'pretty girls' are our grandkids. ?
I built an analog VFO in the 70's, doing all kinds of things to get freq stability with temp changes, etc.

My 2nd ubitx will have the touch display and mega2560 board that I like.

Doing good on FT8 and first CW contact today. The OM had the gall to give me 529! ?Never heard if lower than 449. ??. ?Had 3 watts on 20.

I am an old dart like you! Its the price we pay for having done a few things in our lives.
This is interesting: My Raduino is fine. It was the rotary encoder that was preventing tuning and entering the menu. I had initially suspected so and ordered 5, because they are fragile and handy to have, from Digi Key. They were slow coming but arrived Thursday. Once I made the swap all was fine and the radio came to life.
I did order a Mike Hagen/RaduinoUmax today for something to play with and it should arrive early next week.
All in all these rigs are pretty decent for the money involved and very simple to assemble. They are very hackable but I am a math guy not an electronics guy so my hacking is liable to be unexpected by the electronics guys.

According to the website, the only difference in the Raduino¡¯s is the firmware. Are you saying this is not the case?

The Bitx40 Raduino used to use 2 connectors with wiring harnesses.? ? The uBITx uses a connector and a row of pins.? The pins eliminate the need for the signal wire harness.??
Otherwise, it is basically the same.

Exactly. I have both the bit40 and uBitX and as far as I can tell the difference is firmware and means of connecting to the main board.?
In the uBitX the firmware uses an encoder to change the vfo and the bitx40 uses a potentiometer.....

Its not that hard to replace the Arduino.I have done it on my uBitx and will do it soon on a Bitx40.
You can buy a

Easy enough I suppose, but I do see a lifted pad there, 4 up from the bottom left.
The biggest problem with most rework is damage to the board, though that one looks easy to deal with.

How did you go about removing it??
My guess is a full blown rework station with vacuum solder sucker.

If you clipped the pins first and pulled them out one by one,?
I'm curious how you went about clipping them.

A socketed Nano is nice, but then it mechanically interferes with the LCD display.
I've socketed my Nano on the opposite side of the raduino as per this post
? ??/g/BITX20/message/50027
Quite happy with the result.

Actually it was the fist time for me doing this with rather modest tools.
I clamped the board in a small vise and used a spring loaded solder sucker to remove the solder from all the pins on both sides.
Ended up using plyes to carefully pull the Arduino from the board. Then pulled the remaining pinns from the board one by one.
I think the the most challenging part is to solder the new Arduino back in place and avoid "bridges" between the solder joints. A magnifying desklamp is your biggest friend.

Mike aka KC2WVB

Kj6etl, did you solve your tuning issue? I remember it as seeming similar to the issue I had. In my case it was what I first expected, ie a bum encoder and the new encoder made the issue disappear.?
