New Group Specifically for "Homebrew Test Equipment"

My 2-cents worth, homebrewtestequipment, homebrew test equipment, or?DIYtestequipment? My first choice when using a search engine is the four words home brew test equipment or three words if you combine homebrew.

Hello

A few days ago I mentioned an idea for starting a separate discussion group for
home-brew ham radio test equipment.? The idea still seems interesting but I seem
to be struggling with what to call the group.? It needs to be short enough to type in
easily, and still definitive enough to not be confused with equipment for testing
pigs or homemade beer,? Some possible options that come to mind:
  • ??? (probably too long)
  • ? (Home Brew Test Equipment)
  • or....?
There are probably a myriad of better names.? Any ideas?

My Linux NFS File Server has a Test Equipment directory that already has
several ideas which could be used as a start for this new discussion group.
I am sure that others have similar card files or computer files which would be
interesting to the rest of us who like building our own test equipment.? This
does raise questions about how to differentiate hardware test equipment
projects from combination hardware and software based test equipment?

On a slightly different direction........
In the past there have been a few complaints about the amount of software
discussion here on the BITX20 forum.? That raises the question of possibly
starting a separate discussion group specifically for software that is relative
to BITX based equipment.? Again, if such a forum were established, what
should it be called?
  • groups/g/BSoft
  • or...?
In the case of Homebrew Test Equipment and a possible new BITX-Software
group we would need a couple of volunteer moderators for each group.

We already have spawned an Antenna discussion group at
which is working quite well.? The moderators are doing a good job and some
interesting discussion has started.

I can start new discussion groups, but it is possible that someone else could do
the same.? The process involves logging into the "create a group" page and
filling out the form.? The process is quite easy and straightforward.

It will not hurt my feelings if you want to start one of the above groups, or another
group.? If you have ever envisioned yourself as being the Lord and King of a
discussion group...Go For It !

Hi Terry,

The new group has already formed. If you haven't already signed on it's on grups.io. Login and search for HBTE.

I would prefer that it remain here to avoid "fragmentation" ...one stop shopping
The software guys seem to be able to ignore most of the hardware discussion ...as I do most of the software and or touch panel stuff but its nice that its there for future reference

What I would really like is a wide-band frequency source with SSB modulation ..I've got several AM modulated signal generators, but I've never seen one with SSB capabilities ...What sections of the ubitx would be necessary for such a beast?

Depends on what you mean by SSB modulation.
If all you want is is the same effect as an SSB transmitter with a 1khz tone into the mike,
most any RF source can do that.? As in any CW transmitter, or one channel of the si5351.

I would think two tone SSB modulation could be correctly simulated by summing two channels from the si5351.
Obviously, the si5351 emits a square wave.? If you care about the harmonics, will need to have a different LPF
for each octave of interest.

If you have a pressing need to hear voices, then that's pretty much half of a uBitx.
If you don't need 10 Watts, then can?strip out the entire power amp from Q90 on out.
May or may not feel a need to include the transmit LPF's to reduce harmonics.
And perhaps revisit a couple months worth of forum posts about spurs and mixer levels and such.

Hmmm .. Twas just a hair-brained thought .. Two-tone test for sure

ubitx stripped of all rx cruft.. everything past t10 or so on xmit side ..reprogram to remove software blocking transmission on non-ham freqs
seems like a long way round ..

Jim

I think an si5351 breakout board, a resistor network to combine two channels (some will want all three),
and a Nano with LCD and rotary encoder to program the si5351 with is about all you want.
Could just be your Raduino borrowed from a uBitx/Bitx40 with a new program and the resistor network.
The si5351 channels would all be programmed for frequencies a few hundred hertz apart.
Assuming this is being used to test an SSB receiver, the receiver will strip out the harmonics for you.
And if the receiver does not, then the harmonics will be obvious from the distance between the new
audio tones thus generated that will be coming out of the receiver.

But if you want voice, not just a few tones, then something like the double conversion uBitx exciter
is not a bad start for an all-of-HF SSB test generator.? Either that or some kind of phasing modulator.

Everything I do is longer than initially anticipated, it's the law:

Thanks ...Gotta go look at some numbers at least
