Kit projects AGC install - extremely frustrated.

Kelly Mabry

Hi everyone this is Kelly. Trying to install the kit-projects AGC Board and I have a question. Which one of these diagrams is right for the switch? Also I'm having trouble with the install. I am getting 12 volts to the board. However I am having issues. Now where I have I had great audio, I have barely nothing with the audio gain turned wide open. I have not tried to attach the s meter wiring yet. All other wiring connected. I fear its mis wired at the switch not sure.

The middle image is the correct one. We had a issue and corrected it, sorry about the confusion. As for the audio issue could be two fold with incorrect switch wire-up and you may need to find the sweet spot in the RF gain pot they can be touchy.

Looking at your traces I am concerned you may have been a bit to aggressive and damaged them. I hope you did not use a grinding tool. a Flathead or a light hand with a razor blade would have done the job.

I can confirm? proper switch wiring according to your input. 12v at the AGC board is confirmed.?
Yes I had to use a dremel to cut the trace. I did use a small flat blade to expose the copper at the solder points, however. I will solder a wire from A7 on the raduino to the s meter pad to complete the install.?

Worst case, if i can't? fix the AGC, or restore the board, I will have to buy another V5 and drop it in... i will have a spare raduino.? Hey i guess i found my limitations as far as building is concerned.? I am not as good as I used to be in building.? No worries. Just accept it and progress.?
But not giving up without further testing and evaluation.?

If it gets to that point, I'll give you a contribution towards your board so I can try to solve another problem or soldier on towards a 3rd radio.

Ted,
Thank you for the gracious offer, but I couldn't accept that.? Besides if there is no risk, the reward has no luster, or appeal.? I believe in having some skin in the game and trial and error are part of lessons learned, and the basis for success is an occasional failure now and then. My Kenwood? is a Kenwood... my ubitx has character...like when the Millennium Falcon wouldn't go into hyperdrive.?

PS.? Does anyone else laugh when Han Solo says "...bring me the hydrospanner..."? uh...water wrench?

Not at all. I use one from time-to-time to tighten the loose water in the basement.

A proper hydrospanner is no joke.? You can strip the hell out of your alluvial damper if you're not careful.

Can we have pictures with the board installed as well, It is very hard to troubleshoot this with out seeing how you have it attached. I Also see the possibility that the 12v RX rail is cut, I would triple check that as that could easily kill your audio.

I looked at the switch wiring "directions" and couldn't make any sense of the "illustration".? I'm going to look for a schematic today and see if I can figure out how to wire the switch.? The directions, which were too much trouble to obtain, are close to useless.

Jack,

We have not had any complaints about the directions you would be the 1st. To obtain them they are on the site in your account under downloads, can't get much simpler than that. It is stated on the product page as follows "All files are available in "My Account-My Orders-Downloads" If for any reason you can not get the files let us know and we will e-mail them."

I even sent them to you via e-mail.

As stated in the instructions "Below is a diagram of the switch
with the back facing you and the locking notch on the front facing up."

We have tried to make them as simple as possible if you have any suggestions please let us know.

I'm not looking for "simple as possible",? I'm looking for a schematic.?

As requested here is what i have done. Also have electrical tape underneath it to insulate the the board as in the instructions.?

In that picture it looks like the RF gain pot has not been adjusted yet. There is a range on it where it acts almost like a short to ground. To tune the knob to max you need to find an active signal and adjust it. Please do this next. Even if you think you have please do it again. The adjustment can be very finicky.

Jack your the only one who seems to have had a real issue with this. I can assure the the schematic is harder then the drawings we gave. I Know I screwed the first drawing UP! If your having issues with your unit please start a thread instead of derailing someone else's with your griping. The schematic for the OG circuit is available on ND6T's site. The only changes we have made are adding a 5v regulator, and wiring a switch up to pick a different time constant resistor. If your so confident that you can understand the schematic, Then good the part that relates to the switch is inside the instructions zip WITH indications as to what pads are what. If you can not seem to find them in the zip, Kelly here has posted them in the OP on this thread. The second picture has the correct wire up schematic for the switch.

David, as far any of my problems,? it was due to my lack of expertise and proper techniques.? I know that I have never suffered from lack of assistance.? Indeed you and the entire community has been exemplary and enthusiastic about helping.? Jack, all you need do is ask, and answers WILL be forthcoming.

Hi

I know it's a pain when it just does not seem to come right for you.? Please take a good look at the photo of the AGC board installed, on the vertical section directly below the "KE2GKB" text the first wire soldered to the board has some loose stray strands, I'm not criticising your soldering here, we all have moments like this, but while your working on the board this connection and the final red wire, near the letter "V", could do with tiding.? This may not be your current issue but may become one in the future.? By the way, Great photo.

I have seen the schematics for the older versions of the board, neither corresponds with the nomenclature on the current version for the release time "adjustment" R's.

Why is it a problem to see a schematic for the version you are selling? Do you just not have one?

Hi,

That's not a 2P3T switch.? With only six connections it can either be a 2P2T or a 3PST.

73,

Mark

Mark, it is a DP3T on/on/on often referred to as a shorting switch.

?Jack, the schem we use is the same as nd6t's with the addition of a 5v reg and not as many decay setting options that's it. Once I get back to my computer I will send it to you. Also will add same as Tim has. Make a new thread or email us don't derail another's thread. may be try to be less insulting or rude.
