Don't forget this video that was just mentioned on troubleshooting the radio with nothing more than a short piece of wire.?

If I set my meter on 10 amps, I'm reading a .01 on the meter when I measure the current. Wouldn't that be the 100 milliamps idle current? When I hit PTT, it goes up to .02

I bought a Yaesu FT-101EX that someone robbed some parts out of (it was guaranteed to have some missing parts) and among the missing parts were the 10 meter crystals (11 meter crystal was there tho). So I made a little circuit that plugged into the crystal sockets after I removed all of 'em, and it connected to an arduino nano and an Si5351. Change the band switch and the 5351 injects the right signal. They were all a bit off freq tho. I didn't pay much attention at the time but it's gotta come back to the bench soon, so I'll take care of that as well.

So i just change the crystal frequency in the sketch and bingo! no calibratin needed. Measure the BFO cystal oscillator andput THAT inthe sketch also and BINGO! perfect frequency accuracy right out of the box.

Then I realized I could replace theVFO in my Heathkit--- measured all the heterodyne oscillators (using a receiver) and the BFO oscillators in theheahtkit and rewrote the sketch to PERFECTLY control the heathkit --- also made it simulate an FT-857d so now computer controllable --- I put the sketch on GitHub (never did THAT before!) and bingo, we have a computer controllable, digitally accurate Heahtkit athat is is virutally immmune to EMP. For our EOC.

Cool -- good move. Search around a bit and hopefully you'll find the
signal!!!! If you do, you'll be several miles ahead on this project.

Vince that is a very cool story about the FT-101.....one of the most mind-blowing things ever happened to me was when Jerry here finally got me to understand that a mixer would do quite well with a SQUARE WAVE INPUT.......I never understood mixers so well, ever in my life before reading things on this forum.....opened a new vista for me about radios.

WOW!!!? ?So now you have a working Raduino!??

I'm attaching a sketch that worked well with one of my rigs -- is is from BEFORE? Allard added his interuppt part.? ?I was too lazy to keep with that level of changes.....this should compile and run without the interrupt stuff.

I'm watching the video that was suggested and after an initial thing dependent on a scope -- that is UNNESSARY IN YOUR CASE because you already now have a known good Raduino --- the video is extremely good at checking stage by stage.

Not *my* problem, *yours*. I'm 67 now and can remember as a 6-y-o constructing my own microphone (carbon) from pencil-lead and razor-blades and connecting that in series with the (large) dry cells from the (party-line) telephone and my dad's WWII-surplus ZC1 headphones to hear my mother and sister at the other end of the house as if they were in the same room (actually beneath the house!). If your 9-y-o is interested, foster that. You'd be surprised just how tech-savvy the young'uns can be these days.
Anyone with primary-school English and a sense of the logic of "because this, therefore that" can handle this level of tech given encouragement.

?OK....so using the sketch that I sent you, are you now able to find a signal around the 5 MHz range when using the rig in LOWER sideband on 40 meters?? ??

(Note that I typically switched around Alllards tap-choices so that 1-tap switches between upper and lower sideband --- didn't like the way he had it)

If you're now able to find THAT signal then you not only have a working raduino, you have one that is producing the RIGHT REQUENCIES to receive with, and you can advance with the video earlier mentioned.? ?SKIP the first part with the scope (you don't need that part if you have the Raduino working) and use the wire to trouble shoot each section.

I think you're going to need to spend a bit of time with the schematic and the video to see what the author is checking.? ?The video is easy to do, but I would ahvve to work with the schematic to understand exactly what he was really testing.

By the way, I think you have an EXTRA class license --- you are no dumb bunny there!!!!

Now that you have a raduino that appears to work, you're a huge bit further.? ?I'm on call tomorrow night and have to skoot now to get some sleep so I can work tomorrow, but if you decide to just ship to me, you can email me at?

ggibby@...

and we can help you out.? ? You're a better judge of your available time/ skills / frustrations and how best to meet the needs of your daughter/family.? ? It may be just one of the coils (as mentioned frequently in the video) that is shorted or something....but it IS fixable......just a finite number of itty bitty little components!!!!

Cheers, you've made a huge amount of progress already!? You should pat yourself on the back at how fast you have compiled and loaded several sketches, manipulated your comms receiver and tested your busted bitx to push it closer to life again!!!

It may not be the same with your browser but with my download manager, I need to consciously overwrite the previous version each time I download the latest from github, otherwise it assumes that it is the same file and doesn't save it. It took a few updates for me to wake up to the fact that I didn't infact have the latest version.

Just to reiterate what I'm doing...I'm clicking on the raduinov1.27.3.ino file to load amunter's sketch. it asks me to put it in a folder. yes. I'm selecting include pin interrupt library. then i compile the sketch and select upload. Right?

Correct, see that the correct PORT is selected in Tools menu and the board should be NANO.

What I would have done is to load the original sketch and get the board working in RX, everything else
later.
