CW operation on microBITX
Hi Geoff,

Be sure the key contacts are very clean. My key will fail to operate the uBitx in CW mode if there is least imperfection. I installed the CEC software and that improved. It also has other features for CW that make it worthwhile. It is so easy to install that even *I* can do it. I suspect that CW operation is an afterthought of the designers. Maybe not. I was wrong one time before ;) 73, Bill KU8H On 1/18/19 2:24 PM, geoffg3wzp@... wrote:
Hi ...why cant I get the tx/rx working on CW ????? I use the 4k7 pull up resistor as per drwg but when I press key the tx sends? R then back to receive ....if I leave the 4k7 out the tx goes into transmit sending R then flips back into rx and then tx again ...help ! --

I suggest not changing firmware yet, until any bugs worked. I have made dozens of qsos in default setting. Yes its different but it works. Note when you are key down there is a brief pause,? then action. The display changes to say CW. Now if your pause is long, it will revert to ssb, annoying so I try to not pause so long. Yes the length before this happens can be adjusted, but I found default the best. Take time to determine hardware is working. Then consider the kd8cec upgrade, that many prefer for cw. Your rig may be okay. BTW I am using an audio filter for narrow receive. Its a nice rig but takes some operator adjustment. Curt |
I have ver. 3 without any firmware update. I had initially a trouble where cw was sent incorrectly even with my laptop and the homemade optoisolated interface I use for contests. After tinkering quite a bit I found a kit by wb9kzy, the island keyboard with the output for tube transmitters that works perfectly. The output of that kit contains a solid state relay and I think this makes the trick. Maybe a regular relay which is cheaper (but noisier) could be used as well, I may try it. The relay might assure a clean contact. If you opt for the relay solution please let me know whether it works for you. Thanks for the info.....I will get the mic etc fitted tomorrow and see if the rig is ok on SSB??? ...then have a look at the CW again.....evne if I short the contact on kack socket to ground directly it still goes to transmit send a? R then reverts to rx .....am I missing something ?? When I go to CW setting on the SELECT control it just asks me to set speed ...is that correct ??
Sorry if this all sounds a bit stupid but upto now I have been a valve ( tube) man !! 73 |

Not stupid at all. Please refrain from referring to list members as 'stupid' - even it that member is yourself:) I recall that some hams had to play with resistor values to get the CW keying to work right. I was going to do that until I tried a Vibroplex bug that I used the dash lever as a sideswiper straight key. It made an awesome difference. I had burnished the contacts on my 50 year old straight key but CW was still "flakey" on the uBitx - okay on other radios. Finally I used some DeOxit - just a tiny touch - on the key contacts and now the uBitx behaves nicely. Be very sure your keying contacts are absolutely clean. 73, Bill KU8H On 1/20/19 12:02 PM, geoffg3wzp@... wrote:

fantastic to have you aboard !? for CW - there isn't a specific mode.? for 40m - note rig will say LSB.? then press the key - display should read CW and you should hear sidetone.? if you got rig doing this - I would observe on your power meter if you have transmitted power.? that 4.7k resistor must be in place.? what happens is the controller reads the voltage across this resistor - and knows to do CW.? this only works with a straight key.? with a paddle there is need to externally add 2 resistors - I can talk you through this as required.? that thing you found is a menu setting -- yes speed and I forget what else.? honestly the most important menu operation here is to press the button - see BAND SELECT - press again without turning knob - and you can QSY between bands by turning the knob.? this rig has its own coolness - be patient and enjoy the ride.? I can discuss via email - see qrz.com.? when I get this rig sufficiently worked - I may need your help when I build a valve rig.? Curt WB8YYY |

thanks for reply .....I will have another look today when I have finished getting the mic attached to check out SSB first ..if that all works then back to the key ...CW is my preferred mode goes back to days of no money as a teenager when I got licence in 1967 couldnt afford an AM modulator so all rigs were CW only ! Urban QRM here is S8 so hoping to use the MbitX on holidays now I am retired ! 73 |

Well guess I am the dummy !! Got rig going on SSB then revisited the settings and on CW found all the options? that I had not realised were there!! --
