[email protected] #22506 Just a quick question, I have not yet blown the IRF510 but I found a few IRF520's in my junk drawer. ?Specs look very similar but current handling is much higher. ?I have not analyzed the schematics but guessing someone here has already substituted the IRF510. ?Is the IRF520 drop in? ?Will i need to make any mods to drive the BitX to higher wattage output? Thanks. Not on the air yet but getting close!

John Backo All Messages By This Member #22509 As Jerry says, there is a considerable difference in gate capacitance, which means a very different input impedance. You can use the IRF520. Lots of people do because of the much greater power handling ability, but you will have to redesign the driver circuit, including the interstage transformer. There are designs out there on the web using this device (including some horrendous ones). As usual, treat it as a true power MOSFET -- it will blow up on you. Start with a good data sheet. Build a separate PA and let us know what happens. john AD5YE
