UBitX v6 worked then died

Dale Bramer K2ISP

New to the group and having trouble getting a search result on my exact symptoms. ?New uBitX v6 running stock v6.1 was working fine until¡. ?The signal audio started getting weak, not the volume, and at the same time the audio started sounding tinny then faded out. ?Now there is only noise with a very random staticky sound. ? Same with or without antenna connected, no difference. I would expect very little to no audio (white noise with no static) with antenna disconnected, and be much louder noise with signals with antenna connected. I also noticed that the menu was corrupted where top two lines were ok, and bottom line text was corrupted. But it could have been like that before it failed as the selections were acting flakey. Reloaded Nano with what I could tell was latest 6.1.3, ?was showing 6.1 on display and menu was restored to normal operation. ?However still same audio noise/static with or without antenna. ?(Palomar OCF 1040, works fine with the Icom). ?Tried the BFO tuning aid, but no change in audio when adjusting. ?I have limited test gear and time at the moment but may be able to borrow a scope. Where do I go from here?

Hi Dale,

I have seen the symptoms you described only one time.? The only way I could fix the problem was to swap out the Raduino board.? I suspected the Si5351 chip failed.? I based this on the clock signals showing signal drop-out issues when I checked the 3 clocks.? There was significant signal jitter such that the scope could not lock onto the signal and measure the frequency.? I had read about this type of failure of the Si5351.

The above root cause is conjecture on my part.? Changing the Raduino board and nothing else fixed the problem after recalibrating the radio per Ashhar Farhan's video:

The real fix would have been to replace the Si5351 chip and verify that it fixes the problem.? If I ever get caught up on the project backlog, I may get to it.??

Dale,
I had something similar - not precise - and it was the cable from the radio to the
mic. Most of the cables from the radio to the mic were broken in numerous
places. I replaced the mic cable and it did fix the problem.

Finally replaced the Si5351 and the radio came back to life. ?Thanks for the support. ?Part $2.69, Postage $7.++. ?Are the relays audible? ?I have not heard anything. ?When I switch USB to LSB, I hear nothing different in the signal. ?Need to look at schematic again to see what triggers the relays. I hear nothing (from any relays) when switching bands, but I am receiving fine, at least 20, 40, and 80. ?

The relays switch in only on transmit. Can you tell us what is the current draw on receive and transmit?

Due to a minor bug in the stock software, touching LSB or USB to change the sideband does not actually change the sideband, that's why you don't hear any change.? But after you touch LSB or USB, if you tune slightly off frequency then back with the encoder knob, the sideband will change.

Current is roughly 400ma RCV, 2.3A Xmit. ?About the same for 20 or 40m. Sound about right? ?Avg 14-16w with a long Helloooooo¡

Dale,

The current readings are close to what I have with any of the 3 v6 uBitx that I own, and multiple rigs that I have repaired.

You should be good to go.? Have Fun!
