V6 Display Downgrade!
#ubitxv6
This might seem a bit strange with everybody upgrading to larger screens but I am curious as to whether the V6 would take a direct swap of a 2 or 4 line LCD display.? With the good reports I've gotten from my V6 I am toying with the idea of ordering another and putting it into a slimmer more compact case to use as a mobile rig in my truck.? The case I'm looking at would likely require a standard LCD display to keep the height down.

I've got a v3, so am not an authority.

But I believe the v5 schematic is the same except for the display. So a v6 with a 16x2 display patched in should run fine with firmware meant for the v5. You will need to run wires from your v6 Raduino to the 16x2 display, since the new v6 Raduino has a socket for the TFT display. The parallel LCD is preferred because writes to it are faster, but an i2c 16x2 LCD might? be interesting for some:? ????/g/BITX20/message/39966 I've never used a larger display. The 16x2 seems perfectly adequate for a radio like this, keeps things simple. Jerry, KE7ER On Fri, Mar 19, 2021 at 07:03 AM, Justin Bowser - KI5GKD wrote:

Justin,
The short answer is yes, there are versions of software that use the 16x2 display.? You can use the original v5 software from Ashhar Farhan, or the KD8CEC software version that is included in the phdlee download zip file.? I would go with the KD8CEC software, as most of the features are available through the text display.? That includes the S meter and Attn and IF shift capabilities.? Of course, the memory manager works as well to handle the calibration tracking. You will need to trace the pins on the Raduino to the 16x2 display using the v5 Raduino schematic.? One choice is to use the serial version of the KD8CEC software as that would connect similar to the Nextion.? You will need to get an I2C display driver version of the 1602 to make that work.? I would go with the parallel version and use a ribbon cable to connect it to the stock v6 Raduino, using right-angle headers for the connections.? The parallel versions are less expensive than the I2C serial versions.? You may even be able to get a used one by asking if anyone has a display to sell on this board.? I believe that this display will work with the parallel connection and software: or You will need to add the contrast pot that is on the v5 Raduino board for any of the above choices?as that is not on the v6 board. There is one smaller Nextion that does have tft files:? The 2.4" Nextion is slightly smaller.? That was the first version that was available.? You could also order a smaller yet display and modify the Nextion code. My first choice would be to try to make the 2.4" display fit.? If that will not work, then go with the parallel 1602, and the last would be the serial 1602. After going through all of that, I remembered that the Raduino board is the same size as the display.? I am not sure what you will gain unless you are going to modify how the Raduino connects to the mainboard, and that will require shielded runs for the clocks.? Also, note that the drive levels of the clocks are already close to the minimum to drive the mixers, extending the runs could affect the receiver performance.? You could try to lay down the Raduino and extend the length.? That would reduce the height by adding to the length.? Another choice might be to create a shielded shelf and fold it back on the mainboard.? That second choice could have all kinds of issues with birdies and the first choice means you need to remote mount the controls and jacks. So the truly best bet is to use the stock case and maybe find room in there for some of the other things that you would be adding external. 73 Evan AC9TU |
The i2c 16x2 display is interesting mostly because it frees up On Fri, Mar 19, 2021 at 08:05 AM, Jerry Gaffke wrote:

Justin,
After rereading my last post, I am not sure that I was clear on laying down the Raduino board and the shielded runs comment.? If you were to remove the front panel controls and replace the angled header with strait through header pins, you would not need to shield the clock signals.? The shielded runs would be needed if you extend the connections from the direct plug-in type of connection. I have also thought up another possible mounting, folding the Raduino under the mainboard.? That way you would not have as many components to worry about.? I would still put a ground plane between the boards. You will also have the height of the final heatsinks to contend with. Let us know what you come up with. 73 Evan AC9TU |
I have spent this week at our off-grid cabin in the OK mountains (yes, ok has some mountains) and have made quite a few contacts with the UBITX V6 feeding into a MFJ-2240 Portable "Stealth" Dipole on a 10' pole.? Since this antenna is just a couple of mobile Ham Sticks back-to-back it got me thinking about what it could do in my truck. If I get some spare change I'll maybe order another board and give it a whirl!
