For anyone ordering in Canada, Import Taxes! #ubitx

Just a heads up, I was dinged nearly $40 due to customs duties. For some reason the ubitx is getting marked as a "signal generator" and not as amateur radio gear when traveling through DHL.

A fellow redditor suggested that I post this here.

Hi Greggory

DHL collects an import fee from you. My ubitx came by snail mail and no other costs to me.

I didn't know this when I ordered and chose DHL, but I am also guilty of not having researched it first, so I got surprised when it arrived.

It's actual a fee DHL charges to "handle" the item through customs.

Couple days before I ordered (india Post to Calgary, Canada), we had some Keithley (Tektronix) equipment under warranty coming back from repair from the US through DHL. Although we had RMA and Tekttronix was paying for shipping both ways, DHL wanted us to pay a fee. Luckilly, Tek rep was able to sort that out for us. That's why I was leery of ordering through DHL and willing to wait a month.

Ah ick. DHL is the wrong carrier to use, USPS surprisingly are the
best. Some carriers insist on a fee although there is no customs duty
imposed on the item.

As long as somewhere on the package it says 'Amateur Radio' transceiver
or the like it should be ok.

UPS is the same for items coming into Canada. I once had to pay UPS a fee that was several times the purchase cost of the cellular antenna involved. However, that was quite a while back so that may have improved but such things do leave a really bad after taste.

Some courier services (most?) use a broker service for all items coming in rather than dealing with it themselves. I knew about UPS and now DHL using a broker service. However apparently one can self-clear items according to:??(I hope links are ok here!)?

Hi no extra charge for me?
109 usd order Late December received mid January?

Ve3ips

DHL will always try to grab the extra fees and I do not use them or UPS anymore

For that reason I'll use the Indian PS and wait a while.

Have ordered 3 BITX40's over the last couple of years and 2 uBITX transceivers in December - all via India Post. The wait isn't that long, got the BITX40's in about 3 weeks or so. The first uBITX that was shipped Dec 14 arrived one month later via India Post/Canada Post - no extra charges for any of them when shipped this way. I learned my lesson with UPS years ago, ordered a $40 item from Ten-Tec and UPS charged me another $40 at the door, have used USPS ever since.

Same here Al. My uBitx arrived in about 3 weeks and same for the Bitx40. I've never ever paid any extra charges of any kind.

I never ever use DHL or courrier service...just for that reason - brokerage fees. We get dinged for to convert to USD and then shipping/customs duty. Not worth the hassle. All my BITXes came via normal post without extra charges - did require a signature on arrival though. uBITX took just over 4 weeks. I can live with that!
